An estimated 430,000 people enjoyed the biggest ever Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann in Derry over the last week where orange and green played in a trouble-free atmosphere.

Why is there such a contrast between Derry’s Fleadh and Belfast’s Flegs?

Steven McCaffery writing in The Detail may have an answer:

But there will be lots of discussion about why Derry is broadly dealing better with cultural tensions than other areas – it is at least showing what is possible and providing an example to learn from.

Recent figures show that the Catholic and Protestant populations are balancing-out in Northern Ireland which, regardless of the failings of politics, provides its own dynamic towards the ultimate emergence of a shared future.

These are times that demand a live-and-let-live attitude. Flexibility is called for. Dialogue is required.

The message of the Fleadh is simple: we need a change of tune.

Chair of Culture Company 2013, Martin Bradley, said: “It’s fantastic that as Derry-Londonderry glories in its status as UK City of Culture the city is playing host to an extensive programme of Orange Order events.

“Given that 2013 is such landmark year for the city, marking as it does the 400th anniversary of the granting of the city charter and the building of the city walls, it’s particularly fitting that Derry-Londonderry will be the location for key elements of the Orange Order’s flagship celebrations.

The first and deputy first ministers are expected to release their shared future strategy paper for Northern Ireland later. The document – Together Building A United Community – will spell out how the barriers will be reduced between the two communities in NI.

People are coming from “far and wide” to get involved in ‘dogging’ in Derry, a DUP councillor has claimed. Maurice Devenney said he has been contacted by a number of people over recent days who claim to have stumbled across “lewd sexual activity” at Prehen and Ness Woods.“One such incident was witnessed by a person out walking their dog at 3pm one afternoon, so these incidents are taking place in clear daylight,” Mr Devenney said.

“I am told that one person saw a male running around the woods with nothing on but a pair of stockings and suspenders.” Mr Devenney said there is now an onus on the police and council to act. He said if the land was Council owned he would campaign to have it gated off and appealed to the PSNI to step up patrols of the areas.

Let us all come together in peace.
