Via The Kilkenny People:

The only harm Jonathan Corrie  ever did was to himself.

Many of us who knew him through the Kilkenny District Court know what his family went through and how they did all in their power to help him.

They were always there in the body of the court, willing to go bail for him, whenever he needed them to do so. However, from an early age he was gripped by alcohol and then drugs. It was his way of coping and his way of masking his shyness.

Jonathan Corrie was a fine cut of a man when he was young always in a T-shirt, he never felt the cold.

He was extremely quiet, a bit of loner. He didn’t seem to understand what was going on in court when he was being prosecuted for being drunk and disorderly or petty theft or rather had he decided at an early age, that he himself was a lost cause. Looking back, it is simple to see now, that Jonathan Corrie didn’t fit in.

…From 16 years old onwards, he was a regular in Kilkenny district court and whatever petty crime he was responsible for, he owned up to it. There was absolutely no guile in him and I always felt that he was a tortured soul and really didn’t understand the world around him. The supports were not there for him.

[Fianna Fail justice spokesman Niall Collins]

Or meddling with the ‘scales’ of JUSTICE?

“I fully understand and respect the absolute independence of any sentencing judge in making their decision based on the facts put before them during any trial [Hugo Porter, of Castleconnell in Co Limerick, pleaded guilty to possession of cannabis said to be worth “almost €18,000″ in a field in Limerick in June 2011.].
“If my actions suggest anything other than total respect for judicial independence that is a source of genuine regret”.
[Mr Collins] said he wrote the letter outlining the exceptional circumstances of the family as the mother of the man’s four children had died earlier this year.
He continued: “I truly believed that the Judge should be made aware of these tragic circumstances so that they could be taken into consideration when sentencing.
“My decision was based solely on compassion and concern for the four children.”

Artist and photographer Sarah Schoenfeld’s interesting, if less than scientific exploration of what various mood-altering drugs ‘actually look like when their essence is visually depicted’.

Having had ample exposure to the full gamut of pills, powders and crystals during her time working at a Berlin nightclub, Schoenfeld decided to see what would happen if she squeezed drops of various legal and illegal substances onto pre-exposed film negatives, blowing up the resulting chemical reactions to create a series called ‘All You Can Feel’. Sez she:

Each drop altered the coating of the film. Much like the effect of some of these substances on humans, this can be a lengthy process – sometimes one that can barely be stopped.

The images are on display as part of a group show at Heidelberger Kunstverein until early February 2014. They’re also available as a book.

Fr Peter McVerry,- who has worked with the homeless and drug users for most of his life said he would like to see drugs “across the board” legalised. The difference between legalisation and decriminalisation is that in the case of the latter a person found in possession of drugs for personal use would not be given a criminal conviction. Legalisation however would mean the buying, importing and selling of drugs would be legal and regulated by the State.
