Speaking on RTÉ’s Morning Ireland, Professor Christine Loscher [professor of immunology at Dublin City University] said that the vaccines have an excellent safety profile in clinical trials among 12 to 15 year olds.

She said real-world data from wide-scale vaccination in the United States uncovered a rare side effect of myocarditis, or heart inflammation, in this age cohort that was not seen in the clinical trials.

The incidence of myocarditis is higher in this age group and while the reason for this is not understood, heart inflammation is a side effect of Covid-19 infection in some cases.

In the US, a total of 4.4 million children in this age group are now fully vaccinated with two doses of Pfizer vaccine.

She said: “The most important thing is that the real-world data tells us it is a possibility and tells us how to manage it and spot the signs.”

The Covid-19 vaccination programme is poised to include 12 to 15 year-olds.

Via RTE:

A recommendation that all children in this age category be included has been made to the Government by the National Immunisation Advisory Committee (NIAC).

It is expected to be approved by the Cabinet today.

Speaking on his way into the Cabinet meeting, Taoiseach Micheál Martin said there would be further advice from NIAC regarding vaccinations for 12 to 15 year-olds, which he said represents a “significant opening up” of the vaccination programme to younger age cohorts.

Mr Martin said it has been a very effective programme so far and the Government wants to encourage “heightened participation” among the remaining age groups.

The Pfizer BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine

This afternoon.

In a joint statement, Pfizer and BioNTech said they had submitted a request with the Amsterdam-based EMA to expand the use of their jab to include “adolescents 12 to 15 years of age”.

Ugur Sahin, co-founder and CEO of Germany’s BioNTech, yesterday said the jab could be available for those age groups from June if EU approval is granted.

Today’s move comes after Phase 3 trial data showed that the vaccine provided “robust antibody responses” and was 100% effective in warding off the disease among those aged 12 to 15.

The vaccine also was generally well tolerated,” the statement added.

Project One Sky‘.

Interactive workshops teaching Irish teenagers vital coping techniques to support their wellbeing.

Founded by Dr Colm Fallon for the classroom, Project One Sky was adapted for distance learning this year.

Project One Sky writes:

Students collaborate with their teammates to develop new skills such as basic breathing techniques, meditation and mindset while reflecting on how truth telling, smartphone use and getting fresh air affects their wellbeing.….

Colm has had an interest in wellbeing and philosophy since he was a teenager, which lead him to study physics (an intersection between maths and philosophy) along with yoga, tai chi, meditation, and world philosophies & religions. He moved into education and has taught and learned in Germany, India, China, the US and Offaly.

His goal is to transform education through technology, by giving teachers the fuel to inspire students daily without burning out, and to allow students to connect more deeply to themselves, a fundamental requirement if we wish to deal with the global mental health, environmental and economic challenges we now face.

In fairness.
