Green Party leader Eamon Ryan has said he does not expect to see the reimposition of Covid-19 restrictions, despite growing case numbers.

Minister Ryan said he believes that this view was shared by all present at a meeting of the Cabinet Covid Committee last night, which was attended by Chief Medical Officer Dr Tony Holohan.

The minister said personal and sectoral responsibility was important to manage the disease.

Further to controversy over comments made on a WhatsApp group operated by  Limerick Green Party TD Brian Leddin where, In one instance, a women, in dispute with members of the group. had the word ‘c***’ written across her photo which was then used as the group’s profile picture…

Speaking at Government Buildings, Mr Ryan said Mr Leddin will speak to the party’s executive and management committee when asked about any likely sanction.

Mr Ryan said the comments were offensive and inappropriate.

“He has issued an apology, which is correct… there is no space for any commentary which is demeaning to a person,” he said.

Mr Leddin apologised for comments he made about local councillor Elisa O’Donovan.

In comments, he described Ms O’Donovan as “unhinged” and “craving fame”.

Mr Leddin, who is chair of the Oireachtas Environment and Climate Action Committee apologised on Saturday night for some comments he made in a WhatsApp group he set up four years ago.

While Mr Leddin did not make some of the most offensive remarks, he accepts he did not do enough to stop them or counter such comments.

Minister for the Environment, Climate and Communications and Minister for Transport Eamon Ryan speaking to media before a meeting of the Cabinet.

He said most people who received the AstraZeneca Covid-19 vaccine will have got their second jab by the time international travel restrictions are eased next month.

Responding to reports that hundreds of thousands waiting on their second dose will not be able to travel abroad, Mr Ryan said they would be getting texts in the coming weeks to attend appointments for their next inoculation.

“This mainly applies to those over 60 who have got a first AstraZeneca jab,” he told RTÉ’s Morning Ireland.

Minister Eamon Ryan has said there should be more “social life” outdoors soon, adding to the hopes for outdoor dining returning in May.

Momentum is growing among Cabinet ministers for a fast-tracking of the lifting of lockdown restrictions next month.

“It was a lovely weekend, my sense was that everybody was really respectful, they were keeping their distance, it was using our great outdoors in the way that we should and people pretty much adhering to the regulations was my sense, so we shouldn’t give up on that.”

Further to the decision to limit the use of the AstraZeneca vaccine to people aged over 60 years and the delay in the roll out of the Johnson and Johnson vaccine across Europe….

…Minister for Transport Eamon Ryan has said he is hopeful the Covid-19 vaccine schedule can remain on track.

Speaking ahead of a meeting with the National Vaccination taskforce, Mr Ryan said he is confident the system is flexible and those who have had vaccinations cancelled this week will be accommodated “very quickly”.

Taoiseach Micheál Martin, Tánaiste Leo Varadkar and Minister Ryan will talk to the taskforce and the Health Service Executive this morning ahead of a Cabinet meeting as the Government sets about adjusting the vaccination plan.

Mr Ryan said the advice about Johnson and Johnson is only temporary and the AstraZeneca vaccine has been cleared for people aged over 60.
