This morning.

“(I was) strongly critical of the whole approach down through the years, down through the decades in international trade, particularly around the dispute resolution where the environmental community among others like social justice organisations said that the power of the corporations within that was too strong, so that was our primary concern regarding CETA and other trade deals that were being done.

“But, there are three developments in the last three years that give me reassurance, some of those concerns are starting to be addressed in a way that is progressive.”

Government Buildings, Dublin 2.

Dr Tony Holohan, Chief Medical Officer, Department of Health, waves at Green Party Leader Eamon Ryan today before a discussion between NPHET and the leaders of the three government parties concerning recommendation that the entire country be placed under a nationwide Level 5 lockdown to ‘combat rising cases of Covid-19’.

Speaking on RTÉ’s The Week in Politics programme yesterday, before any mention of Level 5, Mr Ryan said he hoped Level 4 restrictions could be avoided in Dublin and in Donegal, both of which are currently at Level 3.

He said:

“What we’re seeking to do is not to eradicate the virus, I don’t think that’s a viable option but to stabilise it and I think, yes, there’s real concern when you look at other counties [case numbers are] rising very fast.”

Last night.

Brooks Hotel, Dublin 2.

Eamon Ryan won 994 votes to leadership challenger Catherine Martin’s 946 in a ballot of Green Party members.

Eamon Ryan said:

“It was a really close result. There is no two ways about that. The result could have gone either way. I will reflect on that.”

Catherine Martin said:

“There was diversity of opinion about going into coalition and about the programme for Government and that has been expressed but I believe we need to welcome those differences of opinion and be a welcoming space.

In relation to members that have left, I think it is very important that we engage with them.

I’ll be inviting them to talk to us and I’ll be asking them to stick with us.”

This morning.

Further to the last night’s vote against a a private members motion brought by the Social Democrats which sought to strengthen the rights of workers during the Covid-19 pandemic.

Cork Green Party Councillor Lorna Bogue tweetz:

Last night my party voted against maternity payments and against a living wage and collective bargaining for precarious workers.

I’ve no information on why workers rights weren’t defended by the Green Party. Maternity payments were ‘unconstitutional’ if anyone can shed light on that

Workers rights are integral to just transition – we will not reach our climate goals without them.

I also can’t shake the intergenerational nature of the harm we have done today.

We say we are a party for future generations but we abandoned young families and young workers today.

I’ve spent six years defending the Green party – telling people on the doors they wouldn’t repeat the intergenerational harm they inflicted last time.

This party has made a liar out of me. A new generation of the young will pay for the failure of the Green Party with their futures.
