Paris Pat writes:

France’s Senate has approved the crucial first article of a bill granting gay couples the right to marry. The upper house approved the article overnight by a vote of 179 to 157, with all Senators from the ruling Socialists voting in favour and five from the main opposition right-wing UMP breaking ranks with their
colleagues to approve it.
A final vote is expected on Thursday or Friday. AFP reports the complete bill must still be approved by the Senate, as well as another article granting same-sex couples the right to adopt.

Might want to reconsider that move Dave.

If it’s all the same to you.

Just wanted to let you know about the launch of a new Marriage Equality campaign called “Do Me A Favour”. We’re asking anyone who believes in and supports marriage equality for LGBT people in Ireland to take 3 minutes of their time to watch our new video “Yes To Love” (*above) and join our campaign (below).

Yes To Love, Marriage Equality.(Facebook)

You may recall our post yesterday about Alex Greenwich (above with Sydney Mayor Clover Moore) and his campaign in the by-election for the state seat of New South Wales’ capital city.

Well, the photo above was taken about an hour ago and somewhere in the crowd is Irish emigrant Darren Conlon who writes:

I’m really happy to tell you that our candidate Alex Greenwich won the by-election and is now the Member for Sydney, in the State Parliament of New South Wales. He is the first member of any Australian Parliament in a same-sex marriage.
I also want to let you know that I was approached outside the polling booth by a emigrant Irish voter who recognised me from Broadsheet and who told me she had decided to vote for Alex after reading the article and better, she had also recommended him to several friends!
All in all it has been a great result for equality, but the fight goes on…

Greenwich Wins By-Election For Seat Of Sydney (ABC)

Darren Conlon (above, second left) writes:

I emigrated to Australia from Ireland over 15 years ago, before it was fashionable and all (!). I am currently involved in a by-election for the State Seat of Sydney, NSW Australia.
The front-runner in the election is one Alex Greenwich (he’s second right in the photo above), who has been heavily involved in the Australian Marriage Equality campaign for the last 5 years.
There is currently no marriage equality in Australia and this necessitated Alex having to marry his same-sex partner overseas. If Alex wins he will become the first member of the NSW parliament in a same-sex marriage.
His website is at AlexGreenwich.com The election is in less than 24 hours so we would love a shout-out if possible.

‘Sydney Deserves A Strong Voice’ – Greenwich (GayNewsNetwork)

Scenes from Saturday’s Rally for Recognition to demand the “introduction of inclusive and respectful Gender Recognition legislation that will not enshrine pathologisation of trans identities into Irish law”.

The Rally coincided with the European Region of the International Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Trans & Intersex Association (ILGA-Europe) annual conference which concluded in Dublin yesterday.

Athy based Anthony Murphy who, along with his wife Kim, produce The Catholic Voice newspaper have sent text messages to people in the Athy area urging Catholics “to strongly oppose the reckless attempt to undermine the sanctity of marriage”.
Mr Murphy told the Kildare Nationalist: “We have spoken with a number of people in the town who, like us, want to protect the sanctity of marriage. In the past we opposed the Civil Partnership Bill. The term marriage equality is a wrong term to use because marriage, as defined by nature and morally, is between a man and a woman. We are against any kind of legal recognition of any moral evil.”
