Free Saturday?

On Saturday (June 13) the University of Birmingham [Edgbaston, West Midlands,UK] will host the most competitive test of International Rules Football outside of the official GAA/AFL series.

Conor McKenna, of the University of Birmingham Gaelic Club. writes:

Our men’s Gaelic team has over 40 members and were the first university to field two teams into the British Universities and Colleges Sport (BUCS) Championship earlier this year. The Gaelic team only has four Irish born players, only two of which had played Gaelic before coming to university. The evnt is one of the biggest sporting events in the academic calendar. Despite a decisive win in the first encounter, the Gaelic team has lost to the Aussie Rules team the last two years in a row….

Just some of the photos the girls took of Danish General Election posters. It should be noted that all the candidates are ridiculously good looking and young, not one TD type between them…

[Gweedore GAA footballer Eamon] McGee agreed to become involved in the [‘Yes’ in May’s  same sex marriage referendum] campaign when he considered what he might have to say to any children he may have in the future. “If I ever have a child and he or she turns out to be gay, they could say to me ‘you had a chance to make a difference in that vote’. I don’t know would I be more ashamed that I didn’t vote or the fact I voted against it. It comes down to equality and one less difference in society.”

A number of people walked out of a Mass in protest at comments made by a priest during a sermon on gay marriage. Father John Britto spoke out against gay marriage during a sermon in Annagry [Co Donegal] on Saturday night. And he told the congregation that Gaoth Dobhair (Gweedore) footballer Eamon McGee was wrong to back the Yes campaign in May’s referendum on same sex marriages. A number of people attending the Mass objected to the comments and left….

GAAandSkySportsLogoApril2014_large

On April’s Fools day 2014, the Gaelic Athletic Association announced a 3-year broadcasting deal with Sky Sports. The deal involved the sale of exclusive rights to a portion of championship games.

The plan didn’t really come together.

Dr Paul Rouse (School of History and Archives, UCD1) is the author of The Impact of Pay TV on Sport

Dr Rouse writes:

Although the GAA hierarchy has sought to portray the deal with Sky as a success and consider the reaction of people in Britain to be ‘a vindication’, the reality is, at best, much more complex – and one might legitimately arrive at entirely the opposite conclusion. After all, what we now know is:

Viewing figures for showcase GAA games in Ireland collapsed; The supposed new service for Irish emigrants in Britain, not only already existed, but did so in a more extensive way; Irish emigrants wishing to watch Gaelic games in Britain must now pay much more than was previously the case; The part of the deal which allowed the broadcast of matches on TV in Australia no longer exists and there is no plan – in any real sense of that word – for internationalisation.

Idris wept.

224196GAA referee Carthage Buckley

Buckley, you rotten no-good so and so. You robbed us out of the Leinster final. If you put off the three lads for using the fist, what broke Gerry Browne’s nose. You so and so. Your so and so linesmen.
Don’t forget we are watching you. It may not be now but don’t travel too far on your own from home. You are going to get what they are getting in the North, the bullet.
And we mean every bit of it. You may never get the chance of taking the whistle in your hands again….
We don’t mind what happens to us so long as we get you. Besides it will never be known who did it. It may go a while but we will get you and your car.

Clare Conlon

Clare Conlon played with Raheny United [football] and helped them win the Women’s FAI Cup against UCD Waves in the Aviva Stadium Lansdowne Road Nua.

Clare then joined Sarsfields [GAA football]  (of Laois) to help them beat Na Fianna (of Dublin) in the Leinster Senior Football Final at Clane GAA Grounds, Co. Kildare.
