Taoiseach Micheal Martin and ministers arrive for a cabinet meeting go discuss the Davy scandal and vaccine roll-out…

When asked if he would approach the British Prime Minister on sharing a vaccine surplus, Mr Martin said Boris Johnson has made it “clear” to him his first priority is to vaccinate his people.

He added, however, that it would be helpful to Ireland if the situation arose.

The Taoiseach said that right now the broader picture is on manufacturing capacity of vaccines and that the vaccine roll-out will pick up in quarter two.

A Fianna Fáil cumann in a minister’s constituency (junior minister Thomas Byrne) is calling for the replacement of leader Micheál Martin.

In a letter seen by Independent.ie, his departure is demanded by the entire officer board of the party cumann in Slane, Co Meath.

Mr Martin, who took over the party a decade ago, is said to have presided over its becoming a “laughing stock” on occasion.

“We need someone with fire in his/her belly,” said the signatories in an open letter-email to all Fianna Fáil TDs and some of the party’s senators.

Taoiseach Michael Martin with Fergal Keane on BBC News today

This afternoon.

In a wide-ranging interview with BBC News, Taoiseach Micheál Martin said:

“I worry a bit about the post-Brexit noise from EU member states towards Britain and vice versa.

“I would tell one or two of them that they need to cool it, dial it down.

“This isn’t an ongoing battle between the UK and some of the bigger beasts of Europe. Let’s move away from that. They need to cool it. We’ll be collateral damage in all of that.

“Everybody needs to cool it a bit.”

He also indicated that any extension to the grace period for the NI protocol would be for a matter of months – “It can’t be a year,” he said.

The taoiseach also spoke about tensions in loyalist areas over the NI protocol and Irish Sea border in recent weeks.

Mr Martin said: “I don’t think the threats were as real perhaps, as might have been suggested, but you can see how it can tip over very quickly. And therefore we have to be very, very vigilant that it doesn’t,” he said.

He also talked about fears that such tensions could lead to a return to sectarian violence in Northern Ireland.

“If we handle this the wrong way, and if things are handled wrongly, you could provoke that response” he said.

Meanwhile…

Asked about the possibility of a border poll to decide the political future of the island of Ireland, the taoiseach said:

“If we just see this as a simple numerical majoritarianism, we’re going backwards, not forward. And I don’t believe the future of the island of Ireland is about majoritarianism.”

He said it would be a mistake to have a border poll in the next five years.

This afternoon.

Speaking in the Dáil, Mr Martin said the report from the Commission of Investigation into the homes has afforded the country a “moment for us as a society to recognise a profound failure of empathy, understanding and basic humanity over a lengthy period”.

“On behalf of the Government, the State and its citizens, I apologise for the profound generational wrong visited upon Irish mothers and their children who ended up in a Mother and Baby Home or a County Home.

“As the commission says plainly – ‘they should not have been there’.”

Micheál Martin apologised for the shame and stigma which the women and children were subjected to and which, for some, he said “remains a burden to this day”.

“In apologising, I want to emphasise that each of you were in an institution because of the wrongs of others. Each of you is blameless, each of you did nothing wrong and has nothing to be ashamed of.”

Speaking to The Echo today, the Taoiseach clarified:

“I misspoke yesterday in the Dáil and made a mistake in terms of how I articulated it.

“Essentially I was making the point that the shareholders…themselves weren’t bailed out.

“But obviously the banks, there was a huge rescue package for the banks, of course there was we know that, in terms of both protecting depositors and protecting bond holders,” he said.
