This morning.

Brussels, Belgium.

Taoiseach Micheál Martin has said there would be no additional supplies of mRNA vaccines in July and that emphasis now was to expand the vaccination roll-out ‘through younger age cohorts’ with AstraZeneca and Johnson and Johnson doses.

Via RTÉ:

Mr Martin said there was “some research going on” in terms of mixing of vaccines, and that he had spoken to the Chief Medical Officer about administering vaccines to younger age groups.

He said: “Operationally what we’ve been doing has been very effective and very efficient, coming down through the age cohorts, [with] very high uptake rates.

“And I know that the Chief Medical Officer…indicated to me that he would be engaging with NIAC in respect of the application for administering vaccines in terms of age restrictions and particularly the context of AstraZeneca, and Janssen (Johnson & Johnson), and that would really broaden the portfolio of vaccines available for July and August,” he told reporters on day two of an EU summit.”

Mr Martin said that over the next five years over 50,000 social housing units will be built.

The Taoiseach added that the Government needs to do more in providing affordable housing and to give first-time buyers priority in the marketplace.

He said the immediate issue is to deal with the issue of Real Estate Investment Trusts (REITs) and their impact on first-time buyers…

Hmm.

Meanwhile…on a suggestion by the OECD yesterday that the country needs to reconsider the introduction of domestic water charges,…

…the Taoiseach said the Government will not be “going back” and trying to reintroduce water charges.

Mr Martin said the Government have been investing strongly in water infrastructure and will continue to do so, but that water charges “will not be coming back“.

Climate minister Eamon Ryan had said “we will not be going back to the water charges issue” and that the Oireachtas all-party committee has a plan in relation to water infrastructure and will “stick to that”

Via On The Ditch:

Taoiseach Micheál Martin breached Covid-19 public health guidelines by attending an indoor event held in honour of his late father in Cork.

While at the event Martin told an attending garda to take off her face mask for a photo opportunity.

The event at Blackpool’s Glen Boxing Club went ahead when “no organised indoor gatherings should take place” under Ireland’s level-three Covid restrictions. The event lasted 45 minutes and was attended by at least 12 people.
