Further to  manager Stephen Kenny confirming some Republic of Ireland players have opted against the Covid vaccine…

…. Ciarán Murphy (top), co-host of the Second Captains football podcast, said:

“It’s interesting from the point of view of a dressing room and the dressing room dynamics. I’ll leave the immunology to the eminent professor [Cliona O’Farrelly, professor of comparative immunology and biochemistry at Trinity College Dublin was a fellow guest] and I might talk about the dressing room dynamics and we’ll stick to what we’re slightly better at here…”

“This idea that young men, in this situation, in the NFL or Premier League, young sportspeople, lead a very closeted life. And the richer and more successful they are, the more closeted they are.

“The more suspicion perhaps of mainstream media, to use that terrible phrase, there is amongst these people. And they might get talking about conspiracy theories or, you know, wild anti-vax theories that they would have seen on the internet.

“And this, it spreads in the dressing room in a way that is kind of maybe harder for us to understand, you know, for those of us who work in a regular work environment.”

“…Sportspeople live in a kind of weird…it’s a weird situation that they find themselves in often. And the stick, in this situation might actually be more effective than the carrot.”

Ireland to cease deliveries of AZ, Janssen vaccines – Reid (RTE, August 15)

Update:

A letter from Dr Lucy Jessop of the HSE’s National Immunisation Office, which was sent on August 11th, said that any unused or expired AstraZeneca or Janssen vaccines should be returned and could be removed from fridges.

“As the Janssen Covid-19 vaccine single dose programme is now nearing completion, and Vaxzevria (AstraZeneca) second dose vaccines have now nearly all been administered, any residual vaccines which are not required to complete cohorts should be returned to national cold chain service.

“These vaccines can be removed from the fridge and prepared for return, but they must be retained in a secure area that can only be accessed by appropriate personnel.”

A petition to reinstate Derry Dr Anne McCloskey, who was suspended from practising medicine after posting a video critical of the Covid vaccines has reached over 5,000 signatures.

The Health and Social Care Board (HSCB) suspended Dr McCloskey and banned her from working for all health and social care services after Dr McCloskey said she was “distraught” by the number of young people “damaged” by “unlicensed and unapproved” vaccines.

She said many young people have been “coerced, bribed or bullied” into being vaccinated and that vaccines are “malevolent”.

Via Reuters:

In the first week following the Taliban conquest of Kabul, COVID-19 vaccinations in Afghanistan have dropped by 80%, the U.N. agency UNICEF said, warning that half of the few doses delivered to the country so far are close to expiry.

The Taliban seized control of the Afghan capital on Aug. 15, having already captured most of the country earlier in the month after the United States decided to withdraw military forces after 20 years of war.

Since the Taliban takeover “there’s been an 80% drop in people reached with COVID-19 vaccines,” a spokesperson for UNICEF told Reuters.

In the week starting on Aug. 15, 30,500 people had been vaccinated in 23 of the 34 provinces of the country, whereas the previous week 134,600 people were inoculated in 30 provinces, according to figures provided by UNICEF, which coordinates the rollout of COVID-19 shots distributed across the world by the World Health Organization (WHO) vaccine programme Covax.

Chief Medical Officer Dr Tony Holohan

Last night/this morning.

Chielf Medical Officer at the Department of Health, Dr Tony Holohan said:

“Over the course of the last seven days, 32 people with Covid-19 were admitted to critical care facilities and today, there are a total of 60 people with Covid-19 receiving critical care.

“The median age of those in ICU is 55 – this means that 50% of the patients currently in ICU with Covid-19 are aged less than 55 years.”

Dr Holohan added:

“While our vaccination programme continues to offer great hope, at this point in time, only 53% of 16 to 29 year-olds are fully vaccinated. This age group continues to account for the highest incidence of Covid-19 in our population.”

Half of Covid ICU patients under 55, says Holohan (RTÉ)
