Model of the new National Maternity Hospital

Patsy McGarry, in The Irish Times, reports:

A religious congregation which has failed to date to provide its share of funds to a redress scheme for institutional abuse victims, is to be given ownership of the new €300 million State-funded National Maternity Hospital.

The Sisters of Charity are the shareholders of the St Vincent’s Healthcare Group which the Department of Health said will be the “sole owner of the new hospital” which is to be built on a site at Elm Park in south Dublin.

The relocation of the hospital from Holles Street to the St Vincent’s hospital campus involves the largest single investment ever made in maternity services in the State.

A department spokesman said the “autonomy of the national maternity hospital board will be underpinned by reserved powers to ensure clinical and operational independence, and the Minister for Health will hold the power to protect those reserved powers”.

Trainee gardaí Laura Ryan, from Rathfarnham (left), and Patrice Ryan, from Tipperary (right), with Garda Commissioner Nóirín O’Sullivan this morning to launch a charity Four Peak Mountain Challenge in which 100 serving and retired gardai will take part in May

At the weekend.

Hugh O’Connell, in the Sunday Business Post, reported:

Some 25 gardaí are currently suspended from duty for suspected misconduct, including one sergeant who has been suspended for over seven years.

The Department of Justice has confirmed that out of the 13,000-strong force, 20 rank-and-file members are suspended, three sergeants, and two retired gardaí.

…“It’s very strange that proportionately the far highest number of suspensions and investigations in agencies under the Department of Justice are taking place in the Gardaí, far outstripping almost any other department,” [People Before Profit TD Richard Boyd Barrett] said.

Boyd Barrett has called for her suspension for the duration of its hearings and said the figures show a “double standard” between the treatment of ordinary gardaí and the Commissioner.

“It suggests a fundamental dysfunctionality within the force and given the treatment of whistleblowers like Maurice McCabe, it raises a question as to why these people may have been suspended,” he said.

Last week.

You may recall this.

Portuguese environmental artist Artur Bordalo (aka Bordalo II) and his Dublin installation, ‘Red Squirrel’ on the Workshop Gastropub.

Filmmakers Trevor Whelan, Rua Meegan write

We have been filming Bordalo for over two years and fought very hard to bring such an incredible artist to share his work with Dublin.

The construction of Bordalo’s Irish installation was filmed over five days for an Irish Film Board funded documentary ‘Bordalo II A life of waste‘ which will premiere this year.

The purpose of our documentary is to illustrate the motivation and creativity behind the career of trash art sculptor Artur Bordalo, with the intention of raising a global awareness about the environmental consequences of our wasteful society and entertaining them through the artistry and ingenuity captured in Bordalo’s works.

Bordalo’s effort to make this piece was inspiring to be around. It was an incredible week and we could not have made this happen without the support of our friends, family, Dublin city council and many local business’s who’s generosity was unbelievable.

Seeing people’s reaction to the work has made the countless hours worth it. We hope it adds to and encourages more work like this in our country from homegrown and international talents.

Jo Nesbø

Two weeks ago, the International Literature Festival Dublin offered ‘sheet readers a pair of tickets to an evening with world renowned, slightly unhinged crime writer Jo Nesbø (top) at the RDS Concert Hall, Ballsbridge, Dublin 4 on Friday April 21.

Broadsheet commenter Andyourpointiswhatexactly? wins the tickets with this tribute to Jo:

“I would particularly like tø meet crime writing legend Jo Nesbø because while on maternity leave, I started listening to his audiobooks and they gave me some feeling of sanity and connection to my old life when I used to read books and use my brain. I began to think of Harry Hole as my friend: I’d like to thank Jo for that small relief in a frantic time.”

Thanks all.
