A charming short film about New Zealand inventor, artist and ‘organic mechanic’ Blair Somerville and the extraordinary recycled wonderland of his Lost Gypsy Gallery, directed by Joey Bania who sez of it:
In a remote corner of New Zealand’s South Island, tucked away among the last remaining tracts of native forest, lies a little-known place of wonder. It is the life’s work and extraordinary creation of inventor, artist and self-confessed tinkerer, Blair Somerville. For over ten years Blair has single-handedly owned, operated and ceaselessly expanded the Lost Gypsy Gallery, his wonderland of homegrown wizardry and a playground for kids and adults alike. Using only recycled materials, Blair takes DIY to artistic extremes. His creations are ingenious, interactive, and often hilariously impractical. They take many shapes and forms and share an uncanny ability to amaze, entertain and inspire.
The intricate fish ‘n’ ricey creations of Takayo Kiyota, a makizushi (“rolled sushi”) artist.
Artist Pedro Reyes has a thing about turning weapons into musical instruments. His new project, Disarm, is an eight-piece mechanised orchestra constructed (using weapons confiscated from Mexican drug cartels) with the help of several musicians and media studio CoCOLab.
All the mechanised instruments are connected to computers and pre-programmable.
The exhibition debuted earlier this year at the Lisson Gallery in London and moves to the Carnegie Museum of Art in Pittsburgh next month, with a talk by the artist on October 1st.
From Dropping – a series of high speed photographs by Italian artist and graphic designer Alberto Serveso.
Each shot was achieved by capturing the impact of mixtures of coloured ink dropped into a container of clear oil, then flipping the image upside down.
