duck-3duck-5

A 14m tall 16.7m long inflatable duck created by conceptual artist Florentijn Hofman was towed into Hong Kong’s Victoria Harbour this week, and will remain on display there until June, spreading teh happy, unless it’s destroyed by Gojira first.

The artist sez:

The Rubber Duck knows no frontiers, it doesn’t discriminate people and doesn’t have a political connotation. The friendly, floating Rubber Duck has healing properties: it can relieve mondial tensions as well as define them. The rubber duck is soft, friendly and suitable for all ages!

Owl-turns-its-head-upside-down-e1367421485715-634x725A shot taken at the World Bird Sanctuary in Missouri by photographer Lisa Kee, who swears it’s not ‘shopped. Sez she:

‘Minerva’ was turning her head from side to side quite intrigued with the noise from my camera and then just flipped it upside down. I have watched birds of prey turn their heads all different ways but to see one completely upside down like this was a first. I had to double check my camera to see it actually happened.

saturn
A massive hurricane on the surface of Saturn photographed last November by the Cassini spacecraft’s narrow angle camera. NASA sez:

The spinning vortex of Saturn’s north polar storm resembles a deep red rose of giant proportions surrounded by green foliage in this false-color image from NASA’s Cassini spacecraft. Measurements have sized the eye at a staggering 1,250 miles (2,000 kilometers) across with cloud speeds as fast as 330 miles per hour (150 meters per second). This image is among the first sunlit views of Saturn’s north pole captured by Cassini’s imaging cameras. When the spacecraft arrived in the Saturnian system in 2004, it was northern winter and the north pole was in darkness. Saturn’s north pole was last imaged under sunlight by NASA’s Voyager 2 in 1981; however, the observation geometry did not allow for detailed views of the poles. Consequently, it is not known how long this newly discovered north-polar hurricane has been active.

The newly conserved Starry Plough flag that once flew over the Imperial Hotel (now Clerys) during the 1916 Rising, unveiled at the National Museum of Ireland, Dublin, last night.

The conservation was funded, in conjunction with National Museum of Ireland, by the Labour Party as part of its centenary celebrations.
