Say hello…

…to The renovated Hill, 1 Old Mountpleasant, Ranelagh, Dublin 6.

Danielle Graham writes:

One of Dublin’s most iconic pubs, The Hill, has reopened its doors once more. The soft re-opening of the stunning building took place last Thursday and with a number of sympathetic renovations having taken place, it’s new owners have breathed some new life into the beautiful and historic building inside and out.

The building itself, which originally opened for business in 1845, has been a longstanding part of the Ranelagh and Dublin 6 community for around 200 years with a number of proprietors all having put their stamp on this timeless bar and one time grocers.

Having retained a lot of its original character, you will find original gold mirrored plating above the bar with one of the previous owners’ names etched into its design as well as the pub’s memory. There’s also some original brass and wood fittings dotted throughout the space, with a much loved snug at the very front of the bar for those cosy gatherings on cooler nights.

Behold: a most usual sky. To wit:

It wasn’t unusual because of the central band the Milky Way Galaxy, visible along the image left. Most dark skies show part of the Milky Way. It wasn’t unusual because of the bright meteor visible on the upper right. Many images taken during last week’s Perseid Meteor Shower show meteors, although this Perseid was particularly bright. This sky wasn’t unusual because of the red sprites, visible on the lower right. Although this type of lightning has only been noted in the past few decades, images of sprites are becoming more common. This sky wasn’t unusual because of the nova, visible just above the image center. Novas bright enough to be seen with the unaided eye occur every few years, with pictured Nova RS Ophiuchus discovered about a week ago. What was most unusual, though, was to capture all these things together, in a single night, on a single sky. The unusual sky occurred above Zacatecas, Mexico.

Via Irish Times:

A GP who started getting seizures within days of receiving her first dose of the AstraZeneca vaccine is urging the Government to grant digital Covid-19 vaccination certificates to people like her for whom a second dose is contraindicated.

….She told The Irish Times her neurologist, GP and microbiologist have advised her against getting a second dose of the AstraZeneca vaccine. Because of this she is ineligible to be granted a Covid-19 vaccination certificate.

“I am advocating on behalf of myself and other people in my position, who wish to complete the vaccine programme but due to genuine serious medical reasons cannot and therefore are not afforded the benefits associated with a Covid-19 vaccination certificate and are now facing exclusion from certain services and potentially work,” she said.

Afghans protest troop withdrawal at the White House, Washington DC, USA yesterday

A poem I wrote almost twenty years ago. It seems an appropriate one for this week.

September 2001

Now those geopolitical chickens
have coming winging home to roost,
it’s like roaming the back-streets of Vienna
one of those fateful, unravelling days,
Gavrilo Princip’s lethal itch
having just made its shattering entrance.
From kitchen tables and café bars
everywhere, military strategists
are springing up. My mother’d
invade Afghanistan this minute,
if only she knew where it was.
