Dargan

Raise a ticket stub to William Dargan.

Without him you’d be on the bus.

Sibling of Daedalus writes:

“Readers taking the train or DART home today might be interested to know that it is the birthday of William Dargan, who not only brought the railway to Ireland but was the only Irishman ever to have a statue erected to him in his own lifetime, displayed at the Irish Industrial Exhibition  which took place on Leinster Lawn [Dublin] in 1853, and which he underwrote.
Queen Victoria attended the exhibition and was very taken with Dargan, whom she found ‘touchingly modest and simple’, going so far as to press his arm to show him that she had ‘the… intellect to understand and… heart to appreciate’ his work.
Dargan, an Irish patriot whose fortune declined in later years, invited the Queen to tea at his home in Mount Anville, but steadfastly refused to accept a knighthood. Meanwhile, the Queen’s husband, Prince Albert, remarked sniffily that the Irish public ‘looked like Italian beggars’. I am not sure what happened to his larger-than-life statue (shown above) but I think there is still a mural of the dashingly frockcoated Dargan up on the wall at Bray station?”

Anyone?

Tonight is the Eurosong final, can you ask fellow Broadsheet readers to get behind Can-Linn and Kasey Smith [top with Ryan Turbridy] It’s the only song that stands a chance of doing well in Eurovision as it’s good. Eoghan Quigg’s song is a downer, 1989 called and asked Patricia Roe for her song back, Andrew Mann while talented is not Eurovision and the other song is so forgettable that I cant even be bothered looking for it. Come on Kasey!!!

EuroFIGHT!

UPDATE: Can-Linn wins!

We’re tay people ourselves.

But…

Via the very annoyed, in fairness Restaurants Association of Ireland:

“The Restaurants Association of Ireland today called for an end to the distribution of free coffees from Ulster Bank to promote their consumer mortgages. The message communicated by Ulster Bank is very much one of anti-hospitality industry, completely going against their ethos to “help for what matters”. As an institution that has always represented itself as the prime consumer and small business lender, Ulster Bank is showing little or no support for small hospitality businesses through this tragic PR stunt.

Speaking on the PR nightmare, Chief Executive of the Restaurants Association Adrian Cummins said, “For every cup of coffee Ulster Bank continues to give out free of charge, struggling cafes and restaurant owners are deprived of their daily morning/afternoon income. These people are struggling to fulfil bank payments, and instead of supporting local business, Ulster Bank have effectively employed an independent marketing company to do the exact opposite.”

Splutter.
