Dr Colm Henry, Chief Clinical Officer, HSE at Dr Steevens’ Hospital for the weekly HSE operational update on the response to Covid-19

This afternoon.

Weekly HSE briefing at Dr Steevens’ Hospital, Dublin.

Ahead of a decision expected this evening from the European Medicines Agency (EMA) whether or not the AstraZeneca Covid-19 vaccine is safe to continue to use after incidents of blood clotting.

“We have had a number of clotting events, in which there has been no link in terms of cause and effect of those vaccinations. They may well have been coincidental but they’re under investigation.

“In any population based screening program other things will happen that will happen anyhow in unvaccinated people – illness, hospitalisation, even death.

“There have been a number of cases of clotting and none of the unusual type, and it’s to be expected with this heightened sense of awareness that there will be improved reporting on those to HPRA (Health Products Regulatory Authority].

It will investigate these and inform us if there’s any is any cause for concern, and none has been expressed to date.”

Gwen Layden’s decision to waive rents at her family-owned George’s Arcade has so far cost the business between €400,000 and €500,000 in lost income, she tells the Irish Times Inside Business podcast (above)

“We took the decision to suspend rents for the lockdown. You can’t charge rent if they’re not making money.

“It’s immoral really because they [tenants] won’t have the money to pay you, and they’ll take it from their family savings, which isn’t fair.

“We tailor the rents that are realistic and we have taken it out of our own savings. I’m not saying it doesn’t hurt. It definitely is hurting and dad [Joe Layden] is 77 and he’s been fantastic. But I don’t see any other way. The alternative is that the business closes and a shutter down is good for nobody.”

Journalist Ewan McKenna is censored by Newstalk for raising issues prompted by leaked correspondence from the Independent Science Advisory Group (ISAG) critical of covid response critics that appeared on the website Gript.

Update:

John McGuirk, Gript founder, writes:

Newstalk, since this story was published, appear to have re-instated the original interview with Ewan McKenna in full. This poses several questions that are quite serious: If, for example, the defamation lawyers working for Newstalk had insisted that the section be removed, there would be no reason to re-instate it. The decision to re-instate the section makes this look much more like an editorial decision. In other words, we can be reasonably certain that McKenna’s interview was censored for political reasons.

Anyone?
