…The Bayno (1954).
In 1909, the Gunness family’s Iveagh Trust founded a play centre for the capital’s poor, in Francis Street, Dublin later moving to Bull Alley.
Peter Fitzpatrick, of the Iveagh Trust, writes:
To celebrate the Iveagh Trust’s 130th year, we’ve restored a special, rarely seen 1954 film-reel from our archive.
Recorded on a June day in 1954 by Pat Johnston of the FCA – this fantastic footage has been transformed and provides a window into life at what was Ireland’s finest children’s play centre, affectionately known as ‘The Bayno‘.
The Trust would love to connect with as many as we can from the video and bring them back together for a special gathering and outdoor showing of the film on the same spot later next year.
We hope that you can help us to reach them so that they might reconnect with each other, share their memories and relive their time at the Bayno.
Anyone that recognises themselves or anyone else can get in touch with us at: thebayno@theiveaghtrust.ie or phone 454 2312.

The Irish Virtual Christmas Market.
Founder Ray Mongey writes:
I was thinking, how can we create the Christmas market feeling via the internet… so I set up the Irish Virtual Christmas Market.
It’s a unique way for vendors to connect with buyers in 2020 which uses a virtual marketplace with virtual stalls. Each vendor can text & video chat live to each customer who visits them.
It’s a three day event happening online starting tomorrow the 4th, 5th & 6th December. I already have nearly 100 businesses signed up, we just need more signups from the general public.
I believe this event could help Irish businesses and present a unique way for people to #buylocal and interact with vendors.
This event is free for both the general public and for business booths (stalls).

This morning.
Minister for Children Roderic O’Gorman has contacted those who participated in the Commission of Investigation into Mother and Baby Homes that the final report will be published on January 11.
Minister O’Gorman writes:
In recent weeks, I have spoken to former residents of the Mother and Baby Homes, and their advocates. I have listened to the views expressed regarding publication of the Commission’s final report, and I am conscious of the understandable anxiety surrounding the timescale for publication.
I am therefore writing today to inform you it is my intention to publish the final Report of the Commission of Investigation into Mother and Baby Homes on the week commencing January 11th, 2021.
…On the same day, I will be bringing forward a Memorandum seeking approval to proceed with the Certain Historic Burials (Authorised Interventions) Bill, which will allow for exhumation and dignified reburial of the site at Tuam. Pending Cabinet approval, this Bill will then proceed through the Oireachtas.
As required, on the week of January 11th, I will be bringing forward a Memorandum to Cabinet seeking approval to publish the final Report, and the Commission’s Sixth Interim report.
After the Cabinet meeting. An Taoiseach and I will host an online presentation for former residents to outline some of the key findings from the Report, along with details of the initial Government response.
Publication of this Report will be a landmark moment for the many thousands of former residents, their families and advocates, in particular those who directly contributed to the Commission’s work by sharing their deeply personal and lived experiences. The Report is nearly 3,000 pages long with individual chapters for each of the institutions and specific issues which the Commission was tasked with examining.
