Professor Bill Tormey, of Beaumont Hospital debates Professor Anthony Staines, of DCU, on the efficacy of the government’s rona lockdown response, saying:
“The problem is we’ve had NPHET and the television station here address the point in such a way that there’s massive panic. There is no trolley crisis in the hospitals because people are too afraid to go.
“The bottom line is Lockdown is causing more deaths, more lives lost than Covid by a long way.“

Vintners’ Federation of Ireland Chief Executive Padraig Cribben arriving for the Oireachtus Special Committee on Covid-19 Response in June
This morning/afternoon.
With ‘gastro pubs’ allowed to re-open…
…The chief executive of the Vintners Federation of Ireland (VFI) has said that all pubs should be allowed open in December because the guidelines are the same for food and non-food pubs.
Via RTÉ
Padraig Cribben said he was hearing “all kinds of nonsense” about the sizes of kitchens and chefs, but pointed out that less than a third of one percent of Covid cases have originated in the sector.
“There’s going to be alcohol in the pubs that do food, there’s going to be alcohol in the restaurants, and there’s going to be alcohol in all the domestic settings where there will be no social distancing where there will be no masks, where there will be no hand sanitization,’ Mr Cribben said.
He said he believes there is a “vindictiveness” in NPHET towards pubs and that a decision was made not to allow them re-open three weeks ago.

Taoiseach Micheál Martin and cabinet members leave a meeting where a ‘brief’ discussion on easing rona restrictions was held.
Via RTÉ:
The Government decision on easing Covid-19 restrictions next week is now most likely to be taken on Friday.
A further cabinet meeting is expected to take place on Friday.
It will be preceded by a meeting of the National Public Health Emergency Team tomorrow and possibly a meeting of the Covid-19 Cabinet sub-committee on Thursday.
Meanwhile…
The key point that must be finalised is when restaurants and gastro pubs reopen and what guidelines might need to be issued to allow for indoor dining.
The prospect of pubs that do not serve food opening this year is said to be diminishing all the time.
Ministers must also decide on when exactly inter-country travel will be permitted in the days leading up to Christmas.

Chief Medical Officer, Department of Health Dr Tony Holohan; ‘Worry Index’
This morning.
Chief Medical Officer Dr Tony Holohan said new research shows that people are feeling less worried about Covid-19 and warned this may cause them to drop their guard.
Via RTÉ
It follows the reporting of an additional 252 cases of the disease but no further coronavirus-related deaths.
Dr Tony Holohan said the latest study by Amárach showed that the worry level has reduced and is now similar to levels last seen in July.
A third of those surveyed said they thought the worst is yet to come but 28% believed the worst was behind us – which the National Public Health Emergency Team considers “significant” he told a media briefing.
Dr Holohan said: “It’s not that we want people to be worried but we do think there is a correlation between people’s level of concern and ultimately the behaviours that people exhibit.
“It can lead us to drop our guard from time to time in ways that we may not intend to.”
