Asking prices for houses that were for sale here in May rose by an average of 3.7%, regaining the 5.5% of lost ground in April, according to new data released by property website Daft.ie.

In the Leinster counties, asking prices remain 2.1% above levels seen 12 months ago.

In contrast, average listed prices in Munster during May were 5.7% lower than a year ago.

When it comes to the availability of homes, there were 22% fewer homes for sale at the start of June across the country than at the same time in 2019.

But the rental market saw a slight increase of 6% in the number of properties available in May.

It now costs €70 more to rent than it did last year, a rise of 5.2pc. Over a year, the additional cost works out at €840.

Rents have risen so much that they are now €373 a month higher than the previous peak they hit during the property bubble in 2008, according to the latest Daft.ie rental report.

Dublin rents are up almost 4pc in the past year, with the average monthly cost in the capital now €2,044. This is €76 a month more expensive than the same period last year. This means it is costing a Dublin family €912 more a year for accommodation.

Anne-Mare McNally, Social Democrats spokesperson on Consumer affairs, and Dublin MidWest by-election candidate, said:

“The only solution is to put in place a mandatory country-wide rent freeze for at least two years until increase in supply drives prices down

“Berlin and other cities have recognised that pricing ordinary people and families out of renting is a disaster for a city, for its people and for the economy. Berlin has limited rental increases to the rate of inflation and set caps on maximum rents. We urgently need these kinds of protections here. It’s time that this Fine Gael Government prioritised the ‘locked out generation’ – those for whom even renting a home is now becoming a daily struggle, never mind owning one.”

I did a reverse image search on one of the clearly-not-Holystown photos and it’s of Mrytle Beach Hotels in the US [South Carolina, on the Atlantic coast of America]. What the Hell’s going on?

The container listed on Daft as a one-bedroom apartment

Wesley Ryan of Boskill, Caherconlish, failed to seek planning permission for the 40 foot by eight foot container which is located in the equestrian centre he owns with his mother.

…The property came to the attention of the council and the public when it was advertised to rent on property website Daft.ie for €125 per week.

Mr Ryan told the Limerick Leader that he originally planned to rent the container out for a month, but had decided to remove the advertisement due to what he describes as “cyberbullying”.
