If you can afford a summery shoutout, there is something really great going on in the Irish angling scene in Dún Laoghaire that’s also a tribute to multicultural Ireland and to diversity. Lots of Asian Irish folks fishing for mackerel together – whole families at times, and most encouraging – and a challenge to the stereotypical Irish taxi driver, sorry, sea angler – women swinging those mackerel flies off the end of a rod like the best of them.
And they’re catching too. Mackerel in bucket loads. So, people – take a walk down to the end of the West Pier in Dún Laoghaire or check out the tight liners on the East Pier too. It’s great to see this community in action. They’re welcome to Ireland and those tasty macks too. The great weather just adds to the spirit.

FIGHT!

Further to yesterday’s post on the new €36.6 million library and arts centre [currently under construction] in Dun Laoghaire, Co Dublin.
The view from the pier.
Gulp.

“This is what it will look like from the top of the pier. It dominates the seafront and blocks out the lovely facade of the Royal Marine [Hotel], and is totally unsympathetic to its surroundings.
Given its proximity to the harbour, the bunker-esque style windows are ill thought out, and I think it’s amazing that there are no balconies or viewing platforms. The money should have been used to redevelop the old baths although they probably would have made a hames of that too.”

[Dún Laoghaire’s new library and cultural centre under construction]
The Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown Ratepayers’ Association held a meeting this week and the matter of the town’s new library was raised, with some describing it as a ‘monstrosity’.
The Irish Times reports:
“The new Central Library and Culture Centre is due to open in the autumn, at an estimated cost of €36.6 million. It will have rooms for local art and community groups as well as a 100-seat auditorium, cafe, reading and public internet area, a gallery and a local history room. The crowd of more than 100 cheered and clapped when a woman suggested €2 million would be “worth spending” to demolish the new building.”
Jaykers.
Anyone?
