Clare Conlon

Clare Conlon played with Raheny United [football] and helped them win the Women’s FAI Cup against UCD Waves in the Aviva Stadium Lansdowne Road Nua.

Clare then joined Sarsfields [GAA football]  (of Laois) to help them beat Na Fianna (of Dublin) in the Leinster Senior Football Final at Clane GAA Grounds, Co. Kildare.

Super human stuff in fairness.

Independent.ie will run a ‘behind-the-scenes’ documentary, hosted by Barry Egan, about FAI chief executive John Delaney from Sunday.

The documentary, called John The Baptist, will feature Denis O’Brien who pays 70 per cent of Ireland football manager Martin O’Neill and assistant manager Roy Keane’s wages, or €910,000 of their combined €1.3million wages.

In it, Mr O’Brien praises Delaney’s running of the FAI, which recently secured a debt write-down of €11.7million.

“John Delaney could run anything. John Delaney could run UEFA easily. He could run FIFA as far as I’m concerned — certainly better than [FIFA President] Sepp Blatter, and more honestly.”

Right so.

And sure he’s great craic too.

Ronan Lawlor writes:

Speaking to The Last Word on Today FM this evening, Brian Kerr told Matt Cooper that he believes Mick McCarthy has been disrespected by the FAI in their process to select a new manager for the national side. He also revealed that Martin O’Neill had met with FAI officials before the World Cup qualifier against Sweden in September, while Giovanni Trapattoni was still in charge of the team…

Classy.

FIGHT!

Giovanni Trapattoni has been told by the FAI they would like him to address some of the issues most commonly raised by his critics in the wake of Tuesday’s meeting of the association’s board where it was decided he should continue as manager of the Republic of Ireland despite the 6-1 defeat by Germany and general dissatisfaction over his team’s style of play.

FAI communications director Peter Sherrard spoke with the Italian after the meeting and conveyed the main concerns raised by board members.

These included his comparatively rare attendance at English league games and what is perceived as his lack of diplomacy when dealing publicly with players.

The feeling appears to be that he is well enough informed to do his job effectively but that he needs to be much more conscious of appearances.

Sorted. Now, onward to victory.
