Fianna Fáil Leader Micheál Martin

The Fianna Fáil leader said that if his party came to power before the contract with the government’s preferred bidder was signed it would not go ahead with the deal. It would instead set up an agency within the state-owned utility company to deliver the service.

Hurrah!

However, Fianna Fáil would not bring down the government over the scheme, which is expected to cost taxpayers €3 billion and provide broadband to 540,000 homes and businesses.

Fianna Fáil leader Micheál Martin launches his party’s Local Election Manifesto flanked by Dublin Local Election candidates.

A total of 415 Fianna Fáil candidates will compete for council seats on May 24, of which 87 are women .

Mr Martin said:

An important part of Fine Gael housing policy in recent years has been to try and blame local authorities for the failure to build houses – while the facts show that the critical blockage remains Government restrictions and inexplicable delays which are holding back well-planned and urgently-needed projects.

Local Authorities are only allowed spend €2 million on building houses locally and we believe this should be changed but the Fine Gael government are dragging their heels.

This should be initially increased to €6million so more houses can actually be built without having to go through numerous loop holes.

Fight. etc.

Leader of Fianna Fail Micheal Martin pictured with MEP Brian Crowley at the party’s Ard Fheis in Killarney in 2014

The Irish Examiner yesterday revealed that Cork MEP Brian Crowley will be entitled to severance payments of more than €350,000 over the next two years and a pension pot of €1.4m

Mr Crowley, who was not able to attend any parliament sessions since the last elections in 2014 due to illness, will be entitled to a pension lump sum worth 1.5 times a politician’s salary.

Bebe writes:

This is appalling – Brian Crowley has not been in a position to attend the EU parliament since 2014 and it’s likely his hospitalisation over three and half years or so saw two thirds of the bill paid for – and like others he most likely had his private health premium paid for him.

Most people with a disability will explain how the dye is cast against them – I’m sick of such attitudes and arrogance  that causes him to hold his seat – take the salary – while not in a position to attend.

So many are in worse situations than Crowley don’t even have the basic standards of needs met in this ever restricting economy – some have no home.

Fianna Fáil party leader Micheál Martin launching his party’s European Election Manifesto with Director of Elections, Lisa Chambers (white top) and Billy Kelleher (yellow tie), Anne Rabbitte (red top), Malcolm Byrne (purple tie), Brendan Smith (front right) and Barry Andrews (back left) – the five candidates nominated to contest the election on May 24.

Fianna Fáil leader Micheál Martin has said that his party is targeting a minimum of three seats in the European Parliament elections on 24 May.

He vowed that Fianna Fáil’s five candidates would seek to protect core EU values, such as a free media and an independent judiciary across the EU.

….He said that others are seeking to undermine the union and are continuing to spread conspiracy theories about EU militarisation.

From top: Taoiseach Leo Varadkar; Fianna Fail leader Micheál Martin; Instructions via Whatsapp to Fine Gael staffers

“How can we trust Micheál Martin on health? He established the HSE.”

“Why should we trust FF? They destroyed the economy.”

“Will Bertie Ahern ever run for the Arás (sic) on the FF ticket?”

“Is the talent there on the FF frontbenchers (sic)? Outside of Micheál Martin and a handful of others you don’t have many household names.

“On housing Darragh O Brien (sic) constantly criticizes (sic) Eoghan Murphys (sic) background – is it right to always play the man and not the ball?”

“Are you feeling the pressure from your own backbenchers?”

“Why should we trust FF on housing?”

“Do FF have a clear, stated policy on personal taxation?”

Above are a series of suggested questions that were sent from Fine Gael’s digital team to party members last Thursday evening via WhatsApp.

Sunday Business Post journalist Hugh O’Connell reported yesterday that the Fine Gael members were instructed to send these questions – or reworded versions of them – into Newstalk during a live interview with Fianna Fáil leader Micheál Martin last Friday.

Mr O’Connell reported:

“Leaked WhatsApp messages seen by The Sunday Business Post show that dozens of Fine Gael staff and activists were told by the party’s digital team to reword suggested questions ‘in your own voice’ as ‘we don’t want to make it obvious it’s coming from us’.

“They were also told to avoid using email addresses with either Fine Gael or Young Fine Gael in them.”
