Thinking of popping pills and asking for E-tabs among the crowd?

Guetta grip.

Gardaí said they will invoke the Public Order Act in an attempt to avoid a repeat of the violent scenes that marred the Swedish House Mafia concert in the Phoenix Park.

Gardaí will have powers to confiscate unopened containers of alcohol if they suspect those carrying the drink intend to consume it at the concert. Fans may face arrest if they are found loitering or do not disperse as ordered in an area within a 1.5km radius of the park.

Gardaí will also board coaches heading to the concert to warn fans they will not be admitted if drunk.

Plainclothes gardaí will carry out surveillance on shuttle buses to the show and sniffer dogs and plainclothes gardaí will operate inside and outside the park to catch drug dealers.

Problem solved, right?

“A productive meeting was held today between An Garda Siochana and MCD at which an initial review took place. A range of issues were discussed surrounding the event including matters of serious concern in the public domain. It was agreed that both organisations will carry out a more in-depth review regarding all aspects of the event.

An Garda Siochana and MCD condemn all anti social behaviour and will continue to work together to minimise any re-occurrence.

Public safety is and always has been a priority for both An Garda Siochana and MCD.
Prior to all events a range of relevant stakeholders including Gardai and Concert Promoters meet and agree an Event Management Plan which is implemented and reviewed after each event.

Three concerts were held at the Phoenix Park 5-7-8th July and in total circa 135,000 people attended these concerts.

On the 7th July, total security personnel present was 511 and there were in excess of 145 Gardai on duty. Regrettably a number of incidents occurred resulting in 33 arrests which led to 70 charges being preferred before the courts (public order, drunkenness and drug related offences). In total over the 3 nights there were 58 arrests and in excess of 100 charges preferred before the courts. It is expected that there will be further charges in early course and an incident room has been established at Cabra Garda Station and all incidents will be fully investigated.

Further meetings will be held in the context of lessons learned and orientation for future concerts of this nature. The Garda Commissioner will be preparing a report for the Minister for Justice, Equality and Defence following this review.

Until such a review has taken place it would be inappropriate to comment further.”

Lost Weekend

Judge Eugene O’Kelly (above) said he was “appalled” at video footage he had seen of the incident, which showed Garda Niall O’Connor “make a lunge” at Gary Daly and “drag him in a violent manner to the squad car” after the accused started recording the arrest of his friend on his phone.

…Recording a video was “not an offence”, said Judge O’Kelly, who added that he found it “extraordinary” that the case should follow so soon after the death of Rodney King, whose beating at the hands of the Los Angeles police in 1991 might never have come to light had it not been recorded by a third party.

A sizeable contingent of the EGPA will march in uniform at the  Pride celebrations tomorrow while their Garda colleagues march in plain clothes.A spokesperson for the Garda press office said yesterday that officers attending Pride were off duty and as such were prohibited from wearing uniforms. The policy contrasts with usual practice in Britain and across Europe where police officers have been wearing uniforms in such marches for much of the past decade.

Journalists in Ireland have raised concerns about the country’s draconian gagging orders on police officers talking to the media, including allegations that the state is monitoring their mobile phone calls to try to reveal sources.

Dublin-based reporters, some of whom are under death threats from armed criminal gangs, have told MediaGuardian that the Irish police force, Garda Siochána, has questioned them about police contacts, threatened them with arrest and has been checking their mobile phone calls to suspected sources.
