Hats off to this gentleman who saved this young dolphin on a beach near Belmullet [Co Mayo] on Saturday. After several attempts he managed to coax the dolphin back to sea. Took this photo while photographing a wedding. Great man and well done.

Unsuccessful Independent general election candidate for Mayo Gerry O’Boyle

Further to yesterday’s post…

The Mayo News reports:

A defeated Mayo candidate in the general election is to launch a High Court bid to have the constituency’s result declared null and void and a new election called.

Independent candidate Gerry O’Boyle received just 126 first preference votes, but he claims ‘there was a thousand votes robbed off me’.

Mr O’Boyle further claims that he lost a lot of votes in Claremorris and Ballyhaunis, claiming votes went ‘missing’ sometime between the polling stations closing on Friday night and the count starting in the Royal Theatre in Castlebar on Saturday morning.

Ballyhaunis-based O’Boyle said he is lodging High Court application papers this week and applying to get the ‘General Election Mayo four-seater recalled as a new election’.

“I’ve had people contact me from all over the county who said they voted for me and it didn’t come through. I’m not in this to get a seat. I know my vote wouldn’t be that high, but I expected to get 1,000 to 1,200 first preferences,” Mr O’Boyle told The Mayo News last night.

“For instance, in the Crossboyne box I have nine dead certs there, and only one vote came up on the tally. We have a whistleblower in relation to what I am saying, but I am not willing to say any more about the whistleblower, as there is a legal case pending. We’ve enough evidence. Independents were targeted. You might think I’m mad, but I’m not. It was a total fraud,” he added.

…“Something went wrong. I’m not a whinger. I’m a fair sport player. I can take my beating. I’m not a child throwing my rattle out of the cradle. I know I’m right here,” he said.

Just spotted these tweets about reporters having to pay to access the press area of the count in Mayo at the weekend. Is that normal? Do all reporters have to pay at every count centre?

Anyone?

A giant mushroom found this week on the Great Western Greenway in Mulranny, Co. Mayo

Ciara Galvin, of Mayo News, writes:

The mushroom measuring 20cm by 23cm in diameter and weighing 189 grams was found by local doctor Jerry Cowley behind St Brendan’s Unit in Mulranny. Speaking to The Mayo News after his find on Monday, Dr Cowley said on first inspection he thought the funghi was a ‘large flat rock’…

Dr [Matthew] Jebb [of the Botanical Gardens in Dublin] said he could not find any evidence of a ‘record’ mushroom size for Ireland and told Dr Cowley that he could ‘unofficially claim that mantle’. The mushroom is currently in a large fridge at the doctor’s practice.

Dr Cowley is currently the chairman of the Great Western Greenway Landowner’s Committee, which has called on the Government to include the popular Greenway route where the mammoth mushroom was found, on the National Walks Scheme.
The inclusion would mean that landowners on the route would receive an annual renumeration for maintaining the walks for the public to use. The chairman sees the latest find on the popular route as ‘a sign that the Lord God Himself wants Michael Ring to meet with the committee and progress the case’.

Fianna Fáil Mayo County Councillor Lisa Chambers

Meanwhile at Mayo County Council…

Cllr Seamus Weir told those gathered about of a trip to New York when incoming Cathaoirleach Michael Holmes brought Weir and a couple of other councillors into a hotel to pass the time. A relative of the Tiernaur man was working there.
“We had worked with her in Asahi, and we all had a crush on her,” said Cllr Weir. “She was one beautiful-looking woman,” he gushed. “That woman is my wife’s sister,” Cllr Holmes revealed to Cllr Weir.

…Meanwhile, when congratulating Ballyheane’s Cllr Lisa Chambers on her election as Leas Cathaoirleach, Cllr Patsy O’Brien told her she is ‘a good woman’.
“I went out there (to Ballyheane) 32 years ago and got a good woman too … I know all the women out there are very good.”
