The Oscar Wilde statue in Merrion Square Park (above) is visible from a balcony at Number One, the playwright’s childhood home

On Friday, September 4

Number One Merrion Square, Dublin 2.

The childhood home of Oscar Wilde opens to the public for tours and events.

Currently housing The American College Dublin, Oscar lived at Number One with his parents, Lady Jane Wilde (the Irish nationalist poet Speranza) and surgeon Sir William Wilde until his graduation from Trinity College in 1874.

Oscar Wilde House spokesman James O’Connell said:

“We are delighted to offer tours of the building to the public again. We know people will be absolutely fascinated by the story of the extraordinary Wilde family….

“…The house itself is in amazing condition and the 250-year-old Irish oak floorboards in all the rooms and the staircases are just as they were. Visitors will be literally walking in the footsteps of the Wilde family.”

Tours are limited to 20 people.

Individuals and families will be welcomed into The Oscar Wilde Temple for private reflection as well as to celebrate LGBTQ+ marriages, naming ceremonies, vow renewals, memorials and markings of other important occasions….

In fairness.

I just emailed the council but wondering if your readers are any wiser:

‘Hello, somebody removed Oscar’s pipe from his right hand many years ago. He’s left looking rather silly as a result. I’m wondering why the pipe has not been replaced on this important tourist attraction after so much time has passed’.

Anyone?

I’m an amateur filmmaker from Galway and part of a new production company called the Glimmermen. We have just released our newest short comedy film based on the notable statue of Oscar Wilde in Galway city. The statue is prominently located in the city centre yet no one knows who ‘the other guy’ seated with Oscar Wilde is and few people care to find out.
