Further to Saturday’s Irish rugby victory over South Africa.

Terry Pattison writes:

When Conor Murray picked up the ball to kick for Tommy Bowe, where was [South Africa star winger Bryan Habana? He was standing in the middle of the pitch, exactly opposite Murray, having drifted in and abandoned marking his opposite number – a cardinal sin for an experienced international winger, I would have thought. But not one commentator or match report had any criticism for the famous man! He may be fast, but nobody can leave Tommy that much space…

RUCK!

Meanwhile…

For the week that’s in it.

A new series of tv commercials for a well known and usually overpriced black stout that reinforces the greatness of what can be achieved if we choose to defy expectation.

Hic.

Bob Coggins writes:

“Have a wee look at this and see what ya think – we made it here a few weeks ago about a lad who broke into the Leinster team after coming back from breaking his leg and almost giving up rugby 2 years ago. He made his debut earlier this season for Leinster Rugby”

Fair play in fairness.

No cash/favours/glucose fitness beverage given for this post.

He’s far too handsome for hurling anyway.

Railway Union RFC  (above) has issued a reply to an article yesterday by Niamh Horan of the Sunday Independent on women’s rugby (top).

“Railway Union RFC were requested by the IRFU to facilitate a journalist from the Sunday Independent who wanted to do a training session and a feature on women’s rugby in light of Ireland’s world cup heroics.
We are disappointed that what could have been a hugely positive article promoting women’s rugby in Ireland at time of such achievement internationally has been reduced to stereotyping. The article in no way reflects our sport, its values and the values of our club and our members. Our club’s primary goal is always the promotion of rugby, regardless of gender, and we support all teams in the club equally. “

Commenting on the move, Brian O’Driscoll said:

“Making the decision to join the Off the Ball team was an easy one for me – it’s the nation’s leading sports show and best radio station and following a break this summer I’ll be more than ready for it come September…”

[Australian-born rugby player Ryan Tandy who played for Ireland in the 2008 World
Cup in Australia and who was banned from the National Rugby League in Australia
for match fixing in 2010]

The Guardian reports:

The controversial former NRL, Hull KR and Ireland forward Ryan Tandy has been found dead, reportedly after a drug overdose. Tandy was found at his parents’ home on the NSW central coast. He was found guilty of match fixing in 2010 and banned for life from the NRL. Police confirmed they found the body of a 32-year-old man in Saratoga about 2pm on Monday. They said the death was not being treated as suspicious.

In  a statement, Rugby League Ireland says:

Rugby League Ireland would like to pass on our condolences to the family and friends of Ryan Tandy who sadly passed away today in Saratoga, Australia.

Ryan played for Ireland during the 2008 World Cup in Australia and was a key member of the team that topped the group and went on to play in the quarter final eliminator.

Ryan was a larger than life character and we would like to express our thanks for the commitment during the World Cup. As the team motto that all players had tattooed says, there is no strength without unity – ”ni neart go cur le ch́eile” and we wish his family unity at this sad time.

“Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam” – May he rest in peace
