The Cabinet will meet later to consider a proposal to develop a system that would permit only those who are fully vaccinated against Covid-19 to eat and drink inside bars and restaurants.

Via RTÉ:

This would mean that the reopening of indoor hospitality, planned for next Monday, would be delayed for several weeks to allow time for the system to be established.

The Cabinet Covid Committee met until well after 1am as it sought to formulate a recommendation for this morning’s meeting of Government.

If there is agreement at Cabinet today, the Government will aim to have a plan ready by mid-July that would lay the foundations for the return of indoor hospitality.

It would see fully vaccinated people getting clearance to spend time inside pubs and restaurants.

Brussels, Belgium.

Taoiseach Micheál Martin has said there would be no additional supplies of mRNA vaccines in July and that emphasis now was to expand the vaccination roll-out ‘through younger age cohorts’ with AstraZeneca and Johnson and Johnson doses.

Via RTÉ:

Mr Martin said there was “some research going on” in terms of mixing of vaccines, and that he had spoken to the Chief Medical Officer about administering vaccines to younger age groups.

He said: “Operationally what we’ve been doing has been very effective and very efficient, coming down through the age cohorts, [with] very high uptake rates.

“And I know that the Chief Medical Officer…indicated to me that he would be engaging with NIAC in respect of the application for administering vaccines in terms of age restrictions and particularly the context of AstraZeneca, and Janssen (Johnson & Johnson), and that would really broaden the portfolio of vaccines available for July and August,” he told reporters on day two of an EU summit.”

Over 340,000 Covid-19 vaccines were administered last week in Ireland, HSE CEO Paul Reid has said.

Via The Health Products Regulatory Authority (HPRA):

‘A total of 67 reports have been received describing an individual who was known to have been vaccinated and subsequently passed away. Of these, 58 were reported with an mRNA vaccine.

The remaining nine fatalities were related to adenoviral vector vaccines or brand unknown/not specified. The types of events reported mainly include fatalities often seen in the general population, such as those due to natural causes, progression of underlying disease.

In some cases, the individuals concerned tested positive for COVID-19. For a number of reports, the cause of death was unconfirmed at the time of reporting, with post mortem results awaited.

Reports describing a death are carefully reviewed. However, it can be expected that fatalities due to progression of underlying disease or natural causes will continue to occur, including following vaccination. This does not mean that the vaccine caused the deaths.

In January, the EMA undertook a specific review of reports of fatalities following mRNA vaccination, and did not identify a safety concern. In most cases, progression of (multiple) pre- existing diseases was considered a plausible explanation.’

Damien McCallion, HSE Lead for the Covid-19 vaccination programme said people turning up at vaccination centres on the hope that there are left over doses to be administered “it is not encouraged”.

He said people “would be lucky” to receive a vaccination in this way, as centres are managing their doses efficiently to allow for those who do not attend.

“We wouldn’t encourage that. We’re going through the vaccination problem at a rapid pace and that isn’t something that we want to encourage.”
