As of [last night], students are occupying the Senior Common Room at the University of Ulster (Coleraine), which is slated to be closed down and replaced with a private dining room for the exclusive use of Pro Vice-Chancellor Richard Barnett and his [word redacted, replaced with ‘associates’]. The SCR is the last public non-commercialized space — open to students, staff, and any number of organizations — on the campus. Students are protesting in solidarity with UCU, which is striking tomorrow (Tues 12/3), and are staying put for as long as it takes. Teach-ins, workshops, film screenings, live music, etc., are being set up. Appearances later in the week by Terry Eagleton, Eamonn McCann and others are rumoured. Young Hearts Run Free always put on great gigs in unique spaces around the city and every December they take over the Dublin Food Co-op for a crammed night of entertainment. Saturday’s gig features music new and old: Daithí, Toby Kaar, Dott, Anderson, Donal Lunny, Chequerboard, The Jimmy Cake and lots of DJs plus comedy from Fred Cooke and David O’Doherty and a literary guest in John Banville. As ever with YHRF, all proceeds go to the Simon Community.

Global warming, dude.

Even in 1985, taxation was at the forefront of Bono’s thoughts.

“It’s the governments of our countries responsibility to look after our money as we give them money in tax. And it seems to be an either or situation. Either they invest in life or they invest in death. And for the cost of MX missiles or Star Wars or offensive Defence budgets, we could turn those deserts in Africa into fertile land. The technology is with us. It is here. It is possible to do it.”
“So what I hope this as a public thing will affect public opinion which will ultimately affect the politicians and the policy makers. Bob Geldof says “I don’t know what to do but I’m gonna do something”. Wow! You know, I like that.”

This is Peanut. He came into the DSPCA last Friday. He was rescued by a fantastic member of the public who found him in Ballyfermot [Dublin]. Some young people were being cruel to him and had tied a rope around his lower jaw with a wooden pallet attached to the other end. They were chasing him around the green.
The kind gent offered to buy the pony and then paid a passing van to bring him back to his home in Tallaght where he phoned the DSPCA. Peanut is about 4 year old and is a Falabella (one of the smallest breeds of horse in the world). He has no major injuries after his ordeal and will be looking for a new home in the coming weeks. The DSPCA has a number of horses and ponies looking for good homes at the moment. If you are interested please contact us below.
