Oh.

Education Minister Ruairí Quinn, who celebrates his birthday today, was shown the red card at the Irish National Teachers’ Organisation (INTO) annual conference in Cork.

Later in Wexford, Mr Quinn received a similar response at the Association of Secondary Teachers of Ireland (ASTI) annual meeting in Wexford, below.

Quinn

You may recall how Iona Institute founder David Quinn threatened legal action against the University Times two months ago after the Trinity College newspaper published articles about the much-lampooned online video, The Case for Man/Woman Marriage.

The College Tribune, a UCD publication, is now reporting that a separate paper Trinity News has now received legal letters concerning their coverage of the University Times incident.

James Grannell reports:

“The College Tribune now understands that Trinity News has come under fire from David Quinn in relation to their coverage of the controversy between him and the University Times.”

“In a reply, which was published in the University Times on 12th February, Quinn accused Trinity News of “dismissing” his concerns in relation to the articles, namely that the University Times had defamed him by effectively describing him as “a racist” who had “formed a ‘bigoted hate group’”.

“It is understood that Trinity News were sent a series of legal letters from solicitors representing David Quinn. This is believed to have been the reason for the publication of a clarification to their earlier article relating to the problems between the University Times and the Iona institute.”

If legal action is taken against Trinity News it will mean that both Trinity papers will have been forced to back down by Quinn in a single academic year. This may also have implications for other student media outlets and how they cover issues relating to Quinn and the Iona Institute.”

He’s literally a poor man’s Denis.

Kidney

The Irish Rugby Football Union has announced that Declan Kidney, pictured above holding the Six Nations trophy with Brian O’Driscoll in Dublin, in 2009, will not be getting a new contract.

From its website:

“The Irish Rugby Football Union today announced that it will not be offering a new contract to Declan Kidney after his current agreement ends (on 30 June next), with Declan’s role as Ireland’s Senior Men’s Coach ceasing today. The decision was made following an in-depth review process carried out by the IRFU’s National Team Review Group (NTRG).”

“The IRFU thank Declan Kidney for the unquestionable commitment, passion, professionalism and success he has delivered to Irish Rugby to-date.”

“The IRFU, through the NTRG, will continue the process of identifying suitable candidates for the Ireland Coaching role.”

“The tour of North America, where Ireland will play the USA (Houston, June 8th) and Canada (Toronto, June 15th) will now be led by interim Head Coach Les Kiss who will be assisted by Gert Smal and Anthony Foley.”

Philip Browne, IRFU CEO, said: “We would like to sincerely thank Declan for his commitment to Irish Rugby. His contribution and involvement across the spectrum of Irish rugby delivered Under Age, Provincial, Grand Slam and Triple Crown success, and epitomises his passion, belief and commitment to the game.”

“With a host of new and emerging talent at every level, and despite the clear challenges ahead, we are confident of securing another world-class coach to work with this talented and ambitious group of players.”

Butler

Because our financial journalism during the boom was a travesty?

Cormac ‘Sun-in’ Butler (above) offers a reason in the business section of today’s Irish Times.

“In February 2005, as minister for enterprise, trade and employment (Micheál Martin) he signed statutory instrument 116 of 2005 which, according to bankers, relaxed company law requirements.”

“Banks subsequently dropped a Statement of Recommended Practice issued by the British Bankers’ Association. That statement forced bankers to tell shareholders immediately of losses on troubled loans.”

“Its removal allowed Irish banks to delay revealing losses. The statement, if allowed to continue, would have exposed much earlier the reckless lending to property developers and might have saved shareholders, including those that took up rights issues that some banks offered while sitting on a mountain of losses.”

Later, he adds:

“Legal experts say that this statement should never have been abolished. The fault therefore lies not with Martin; it is simply that bankers have interpreted SI 116 of 2005 in a way that suits themselves.”

There you go now.

Nialler9 writes:

One good thing about the Trinity Ball being on Friday is that there are loads of international artists playing extra shows in Dublin this weekend. Mother will be a benefactor on Saturday with Belgian DJ The Magician, specialising in disco, electro and synth-pop, headlining  – a great fit for this old-school basement gay club.
As Donal Dineen showed with his set on Saturday night, Mother is where you go to dance the night away.
