hackenwerth-1 hackenwerth-3 hackenwerth-4 hackenwerth-5Pisces: a massive 10,000-balloon sculpture of the monster Typhon from the Greek legend of Aphrodite and Eros by New York artist Jason Hackenwerth, recently unveiled at the Edinburgh International Science Festival.

Three unfortunate staff members spent six days inflating the huge somewhat-too-adorable-looking-to-represent-the-terrifying-mythological-Typhon-but-hey-just-look-at-it spiral.

Oh, never mind.

Sibling of Daedalus writes:

The pillar and metal man were put up by Lloyds of London in 1823 after the HMS Seahorse was grounded off Tramore with the loss of 360 lives. Rumour has it that this was thanks to the efforts of the wife of the deceased captain, hence the idea of the Metal Man as a monument to matrimony.
It’s still there and being restored…recently acquired by Tramore Tourism from Irish Lights. There were originally four metal men cast but two went missing and there is a cousin of the Tramore metal man at Strandhill, Sligo.
No evidence hopping round him will help you get married as yet…

Oh.

*stops hopping*
