Behold NGC 1566 – also known as ‘The Spanish Dancer Spiral Galaxy’. To wit:

An island universe containing billions of stars and situated about 40 million light-years away toward the constellation of the Dolphinfish (Dorado), NGC 1566 presents a gorgeous face-on view. Classified as a grand design spiral, NGC 1566’s shows two prominent and graceful spiral arms that are traced by bright blue star clusters and dark cosmic dust lanes. Numerous Hubble Space Telescope images of NGC 1566 have been taken to study star formationsupernovas, and the spiral’s unusually active centre. Some of these images, stored online in the Hubble Legacy Archive, were freely downloaded, combined, and digitally processed by an industrious amateur to create the featured image. NGC 1566’s flaring centre makes the spiral one of the closest and brightest Seyfert galaxies, likely housing a central supermassive black hole wreaking havoc on surrounding stars and gas.

Living the dream.

This morning.

Grand Canal Dock, Dublin 2.

Demand for houseboat living is on the rise. Waterways Ireland says it is receiving hundreds of queries every year and has an ‘interested list’ for Grand Canal Dock alone running at 215.

However, there are provisions for just 28 residential mooring permits across Ireland – 20 at Grand Canal Dock and eight at Shannon Harbour in Co Offaly.

There are two types of extended moorings. One is a residential permit, which allows people to live full-time on their boat. At present, it carries a mooring charge of €278 a year, which is set to increase. That excludes utility charges.

Other extended mooring permits allow users to stay on their boat in certain location for no more than 90 nights.

All aboard as demand rises for houseboat living (RTÉ)

Gillian Toole, former Fine Gael member and councillor on Meath Council

Fine Gael has confirmed it is investigating allegations that a former member in Meath was referred to as “the n****r in the woodpile” and “the f***ing bitch” at a party meeting on Monday.

The comments are alleged to have been made by a senior party figure about independent councillor Gillian Toole, who quit Fine Gael earlier this year.

The comments are alleged to have been uttered by the person to other members at a party meeting in Kells on Monday that was attended by around 20 people.
