Gulp.

Meanwhile…

People living in holiday homes or on campsites in parts of southwest Cork have been urged to seek shelter or find alternative accommodation as a Status Red wind warning has been issued ahead of Storm Ellen.

The Acting Director of Services and Roads with Cork County Council said council staff are trying to make contact with visitors to the area.

Jim Molloy said: “Many who are on campsites are not local to the area and are not familiar with the conditions and storm force gales that we are exposed to in southwest Cork.”

The Poxmen – Punch People

It’s the spirit of the age.

Donegal rabble rousers The Poxmen (top) air their pent-up frustration at modern life in this downbeat folk tune with a similarly disgruntled video animation to boot. Even the sun is grumpy!

The Poxmen say:

“A wee song for all the anarchists out there.”

Nick says: It’s a knockout.

The Ryanair Rock Week 1990 in North West London’s The Mean Fiddler

Abstract Analogue writes:

I thought it was worth archiving this advert I found for the ‘Ryanair Irish Rock Week’ at London’s Mean Fiddler – run by Irish man Vince Power – from 1990.

It was quite a line-up with some great bands and some even I’ve never heard of (nice to see the obscure Screech Owls listed too).

This was a fitting sponsorship when you think of all the bands and fans travelling to gigs, not to mention music business trips. A good percentage of any band’s advance must have gone on travel….

Flowers for Dublin-born Elizabeth Dwyer, Morrissey’s mother, outside her home in Altrincham, Cheshire, England

Morrissey writes:

“The flowers of solace, comfort and consolation that have arrived at Beechmount – my mother’s home for over 30 years, and now, her premature place of rest, are all so Hindu sundar; so beautiful; so expensive; so lavish; so glamorous; so much more than I ever expected that anyone anywhere would bestow on my mother.

For my own life I don’t care anything, but how my worldwide friends have regarded my mother with such great respect and faithful love is a gift to me that no success, triumphs or riches could match.

I send you what remains of my love, and I hope that we all survive so that one day, one way, the halls of music and free expression will never again hold the power to exercise their malicious deception that keeps us apart.”

Friday: ‘A Service Will Be Held In Dublin Where Elizabeth Was Born. All Welcome’

The mystery of ‘Dapper Dan’ has been solved

National Monuments writes:

A few years ago we posted a photo of a rather distinguished looking gentleman beside a wayside cross at Carpenterstown, Co. Westmeath

Fondly nicknamed ‘’Dapper Dan’ by the staff of the NMS Archive and Photographic Units, we are delighted to say that his identity has been discovered during the ongoing cataloguing of our Topographical File collection.

May we introduce you to a 30 year old Welsh born – Mr. John Hugh Williams, Assistant Surveyor with the ‘Board of Works’ (now The Office of Public Works) who was based in Mullingar until 1917…

Still dapper, in fairness.

The Clockworks – Can I Speak To A Manager?

This is the modern world.

Galway newcomers The Clockworks are the latest band to sign for Alan McGee‘s new label Creation 23 and their new single sees singer James McGregor getting the runaround over a broken laptop.

McGregor is joined by Sean Connelly (guitar), Damian Greaney (drums) and Tom Freeman (bass).

The video features the City of the Tribes in all its windswept glory.

Nick says: Their time has come.
