Earlier this month, Faythe Levine and Sam Macon’s Sign Painters documentary premiered at The Sugar Club. This Dublin-specific documentary was shown as a supporting feature.
Colin Brady writes:
[Yesterday] we released a documentary film about Dublin’s relationship, history and influence connected with hand painted signs called ‘Gentlemen of Letters’. Although it’s not as common now, the city was once rich with beautiful hand lettered signs crafted by old school sign writers like Kevin Freeney. The film features interviews with Dublin based artists Maser, JamesEarley, sign writer Colm O’ Connor and the sons of Kevin Freeney, Pauland Kevin Jr.

These wire seats, benches and chairs, appropriately enitled “rough sketch products” were created by art student Daigo Fukawa for his 2013 senior thesis exhibition at Tokyo University of the Arts.
Useable, if not comfortable.
Alice Finch, who has previously built a massive LEGO Hogwarts, teamed up with David Frank to build a giant model of Rivendell from The Hobbit and Lord of the Rings. Over 200,000 were used to create the sprawling diorama.
They’ve plenty more photos on Flickr.
Mechaneu v1 is the first in a series of 3D sculptures by NY based Proxy Design Studio designed to explore the limits of the 3D printing process.
Created using custom algorithms based on cellular growth patterns, the printed object is a sphere whose surface is formed by 64 gears, synchronised by a supporting spherical grid.
Spin one gear and the whole surface moves.
Designer Toru Hasegawa explains:
…nature solves many problems through shape alone, using material only where needed and taking out where unnecessary. This is a strategy you find over and over in the natural world, leading to complex geometries such as bone structures. we used this same logic on every part of the Mechaneu to create a porous object that feels completely solid.
It is – as you will no doubt already have gathered – witchcraft.

Music icons return the tee-love to the artists they inspired – from a mostly accurate series by Brazilian artist Butcher Billy.
A rather charming stop-motion video of Italian toymaker Rosario Calandra at work by Michael Dunlea who sez:
Rosario Calandra from Ventrytoy playfully shows us how he makes just one of his vast collection of 100% Irish handmade wooden toys, “The Bremen Town Musicians”. The video hopefully highlights just how labour intensive it is to make these toys which are unique in design and are made to last. Rosario hails from Sicily but has settled in Ventry village (Ceann Trá) in county Kerry in the West of Ireland. This video will be used to promote Ventrytoy at the upcoming National Crafts and Design Fair 2013 (4th – 8th December) in the RDS, Dublin, Ireland.
