Mayo singer/songwriter Tracy Gallagher (top) evokes vintage Portishead vibes on her atmospheric new single, recorded in Belfast with Michael Mormecha.

“Caves is inspired by the work of Joseph Campbell, American professor of Literature and well known mythologist, credited by George Lucas as having inspired Star Wars. While reading his book ‘The Hero With A Thousand Faces’, I became enamoured with the idea of each individual being the hero in their own story and the trials and tribulations each of us have to face and overcome throughout our human experience in order to grow and develop as human beings.
“Caves explores the relationship we have to the natural world and simultaneously to the inner self, it is a look at the wild, powerful and sometimes frightening aspects of nature that can act as a metaphor for the unexplored parts of our inner worlds. The wildness of the ‘seven seas’ and the dark unknown of the ‘cave’ represent our innermost fears, that which we try to keep hidden from ourselves and the world at large but this is also the place where the deepest treasures and revelations lie, where personal growth and development happens.”

RTE presenter Claire Byrne is calling time on her weekly currently affairs TV programme to focus on her radio show and family.
Claire Byrne Live will come to and end after seven years and will broadcast its final episode on Monday next week, RTÉ has announced.
The weekly current affairs programme hosted by Byrne, and featuring a live studio audience, will wrap as this season ends.
Byrne recently spoke about her heavy workload ‘taking its toll’ as she was busy presenting across TV and radio.

Having seen the many reports of athletes collapsing and some dying in various sports recently, I thought it would be beneficial to see if the same thing is happening in GAA.
The unexpected death of any club athlete usually receives prominent local and often even national press coverage, befitting the GAA’s place at the heart of community life on the island.
Below is a list of all reported deaths by heart attacks, sudden deaths, unexpected deaths or deaths after unspecified short illnesses for all male and female GAA players and referees under 50, between 2018 until this month.
This does not include deaths after long illnesses or accidents. Nor does it include other sports. Recent reports from 2021-22 are short on detail regarding cause of death and do not give ages in many cases.
Finally, this is not meant to provoke outrage, merely a conversation that probably needs to be had.

Spanish pharma boss Jose Maria Fernandez Sousa-Faro has been caught up in a scandal involving people being added to Spain’s National Immunisation Registry allegedly in exchange for large sums of money, with many of them familiar faces and household names in the country.
According to El Mundo, Spanish police carried out an investigation called Operation Jenner which uncovered a ‘vast network of celebrities and elites who have paid money to have their names fraudulently entered on the National Immunisation Register, despite refusing to be vaccinated’.
Euro Weekly News reports:
The leader of the network was a nursing assistant at the La Paz University Hospital, where he is accused of charging more than €200,000 euros for fraudulently registering 2,200 people as vaccinated in the National Registry against Covid-19. He has been arrested and is currently in custody.
Among those accused are Bruno González Cabrera, a defender who played for Betis, Getafe, Levante and Valladolid. Fabio Díez Steinaker in beach volleyball, runner-up in Europe and fifth in the Sydney Olympic Games. The former Valencian boxer and wrestler José Luis Zapater, alias Titín, who starred in more than a thousand fights.

Hosted by Kerry footballing legend Dara Ó Cinnéide and TG4 presenter Gemma Ní Chionnaith, SPÓRT IRIS will launch with a live broadcast from the opening night of Comórtas Peile na Gaeltachta in Leitir Mór, Co. Galway on Friday 3rd June at 9.55pm.
Thereafter, Dara and Gemma will be joined each week in Croke Park by a panel of experts to analyse and preview all the best of the summer Sports action from the United Rugby Championship, the GAA Hurling, Football, Peil na mBan and Camogie Championships as well as the action from the Galway Races to name but a few.
