Number 1. Frank Burke.

Taking one for the team.

Sinead Finnegan writes:

AIG Insurance today released the first video of its three-part mini documentary series, ‘Playing for Dublin and Fighting for Ireland’.

The short series focuses on three individuals; Frank Burke, Tilly Simpson and Charlie McMahon, who each represented Dublin at intercounty level, but who also fought for independence in Ireland in 1916.

The first video released as part of the mini-series tells the story of Frank Burke )above). Frank, who studied under Padraig Pearse at St. Enda’s school, travelled into the GPO with Pearse by tram on Easter Monday, 1916..

After the Rising, Frank would arguably become Dublin’s greatest ever player, winning two All-Ireland hurling titles and three in football. On Bloody Sunday, while playing for Dublin, Burke who was being marked by Michael Hogan was shot by British forces.

The ‘Playing for Dublin and Fighting for Ireland’ mini-documentary series is produced by Paul Cahill and narrated by Paul’s father, Des Cahill….

That low.

A new Structure of Earnings Survey by Eurostat finds:

The proportion of low-wage earners among employees amounted to 17.2% in 2014 in the European Union (EU). This means that they earned two-thirds or less of their national median gross hourly earnings.

The proportion of low-wage earners continued to vary significantly between Member States in 2014. The highest percentages were observed in Latvia (25.5%), Romania (24.4%), Lithuania (24.0%) and Poland (23.6%), followed by Estonia (22.8%), Germany (22.5%), Ireland (21.6%) and the United Kingdom (21.3%). In contrast, less than 10% of employees were low wage earners in Sweden (2.6%), Belgium (3.8%), Finland (5.3%), Denmark (8.6%), France (8.8%) and Italy (9.4%).

From top: Denis O’Brien leaving the High Court after giving evidence last week; an excerpt of Mr O’Brien’s witness statement given to the court

Mary Carolan, in The Irish Times, reports:

Businessman Denis O’Brien’s action over statements made by two TDs in the Dáil about his banking affairs has concluded at the High Court with judgment reserved.

Ms Justice Una Ní Raifeartaigh reserved judgment until the new year and said she would not finalise her decision until the High Court rules on the separate case of former Rehab chief executive Angela Kerins. That case raises some similar issues and judgment was reserved on it last October.

RTÉ reports:

The Government has lost a Dáil vote on pension equality legislation proposed by Sinn Féin. The Government’s counter-motion was defeated by 83 votes to 49 after Fianna Fáil voted with Sinn Féin.

The original Sinn Féin motion was put forward by Wicklow TD John Brady.

In it, he calls for an end to the situation whereby people – who have to retire at 65 – have to go on jobseekers’ allowance for a year before getting access to their pension.

He also called for pension equality for women following changes to pension bands and rates in 2012.
