A series of book sculptures enitled Onde Elles Moran (Where They Live) by artist Guy Laramée, combining portraits of birds native to the Serra do Corvo Branco region of Brazil with depictions (carved into the blocked pages of vintage books) of their native habitats.
Some of the world’s oldest living trees ((in Botswana, Namibia and South Africa) photographed against the backdrop of the night sky by Beth Moon, who sez:
The majority of these photographs were created during moonless nights, shot with a wide angle lens and ISO of 3200 – 6400. The Milky Way, a ribbon of stars that stretches from horizon to horizon burns brightly in some of the images. Exposures up to 30 seconds allowed enough light to enter the lens without noticeable star movement. Each location required a lot of experimenting. and different lighting techniques. Sometimes a short burst of diffused light from a flashlight was sufficient, or bounced light from multiple flashlights was used for a softer more natural glow.

Ancient African Trees Illuminated by Starlight (Feature Image)
French photographer Xavier Hubert Brierre recently conducted an experiment at natural reserve locations in Gabon, Africa, observing how various wild animals react to their own reflection in a mirror.
The results: apathy, vanity, mild curiosity and outright aggression.
Much like teh hoomins.

The recent fruit of Australian photographer Steve Axford’s continuing quest to document the world’s most obscure fungi. These colourful species are all native to the Northern Rivers area of Axford’s native New South Wales.

An eyeball and earhole pleasing underwater macro short filmed at the Lambeh Straits in Indonesia, of which photographer Kay Burn Lim sez:
Most of the creatures shown ranged from the size of a grain of rice to perhaps 2 inches at most. (With the exception of the moray eel and puffer fish). The red “Orang Utan” crab displaying monkey like behaviour was actually residing in a Coca Cola bottle cap. The yellow hairy shrimp after that was barely 4mm tall!
Cut Microbe – an impossibly intricate 1.12m cut paper sculpture inspired by the Salmonella and E. Coli bacterium – the fruit of four months of painstaking work by artist Rogan Brown.
The piece will be on display at Eden Project in Cornwall this summer.
Rare pictures from 2014 of the sadly endangered Ili Pika.
Part rabbit, part adorable rock-climbing teddy-bear, it lives in the Tian Shan mountains of China and was originally discovered in 1983 by conservationist Li Weidong.
Its numbers have dwindled alarmingly since then.
