The importance of community is mutual support and contribution, and the Irish music scene has always been generous in rowing in behind their number in need.

Now is one of those times.

Dudley Colley writes:

Gary Sloan has been a stalwart of the Irish underground music scene for as long as I can remember, and I was horrified to hear the very sad news about the medical diagnosis his young son, Eoin has received (Eoin was diagnosed with MLD (Metachromatic Leukodystrophy) in October 2016).

So, seeing as I was already doing the Great Ireland Run 10k this Sunday, I thought it right to try and raise something to help his family. Given the short notice before the event, even if we only manage a couple of quid, it’ll help.

Gonna paraphrase the Thumped.com lads here:

Community is important. Looking out for each other is important. You can sponsor Dudley here. Please do so, then help spread the word.

Dublin Digital Radio keep pumping out the good stuff, the perfect antidote to boredom and the prescribed spontaneity of daytime radio.

This week is absolutely no different, with new shows announced by the week at this point. DDR’s Cormac writes:

It’s been busy here at DDR towers with new shows coming left, right and centre. Last weekend we were chuffed to host production, CDJ and turntable workshops along with our good pals at Gash Collective.

Some new shows we are now lucky to announce include “Vital Signs” hosted by Neil O’Connor of Somadrone & Cian Murphy of I Am the Cosmos. Irish music hero New Jackson started his monthly show last Tuesday, catch his new record coming out on All City Records April 30th too!

As for something a bit different, last week we had the start of The Recommendation Game, a weekly show where two film lovers take turns to recommend a film the other has not seen, they watch and then meet to discuss it. Spoilers are a given.

The Repeater crew had a great guest mix of all original material from upcoming label Patrúin, keep an eye out as it’s hot!

This weekend we have a new show from Dublin based D, who probably most know as DJ Deece, with Deece Is the Word, and then on Sunday, Greg & Russell from This Greedy Pig are back with their show “Move Slow.”

Get to know. Get listening.

Easter Sun WEB new

Looking for something to do in Cork on Easter Sunday?

Up to St. Luke’s with ya.

Writes Joe Kelly:

St Luke’s Cross, on Cork city’s northside, has, over the years, exuded its own unique personality and charm. A cultural crossroads being fed from all directions.

Now with Live at St Luke’s bringing over 45 concerts to the area in the last year and a half a carnival atmosphere has on occasion being sensed. So we thought it would be a good idea to join up four of the local businesses from afternoon to night time for a broad palette of music, song and dance.

Guests include: at Live at St Luke’s, Lankum (Lynched) plus Katie Kim; Donal Dineen at Henchy’s; Anth Kaley & Lynda Cullen in Rant and Sillk at the Wine Tavern.

03. Streaming above is the video for new single Sum of its Parts, with footage taken by the band from the recording process.

04. It’s taken from upcoming sophomore album In the Still, available for pre-order on vinyl and streaming from May 19th.

Thoughts: A glimpse of something that could be absolutely breathtaking, from the less-is-more school of composition.

Something about anniversaries that just makes for a great hook for a story, isn’t there? Hit Parade knew this when they reconvened last year for a tenth-anniversary show, but in filming a new video for founder Conor O’Malley’s tune Shake of Hands (The Heart), the band has created a little something more.

They write:

Last year (we) reunited for a 10 year anniversary where we performed a charity gig at Dublin’s Workman’s Club, recorded a new song, and filmed an accompanying short film.

Shot in black and white, the new video for “Shake of Hands (The Heart)” finds band members starring in their own urban tale. The setting is contemporary Dublin, and as the song’s plaintive lyrics and Rickenbackers ring out, an intense chess game unfolds, intercut with street shots and religious imagery.

The short film is directed by Hit Parade members Conor Purcell and Conor O’Malley, screenplayed by Conor Purcell, and filmed and edited by award winning videographer Daniel Dalton. Music and lyrics were written by Conor Purcell, performed by Hit Parade, and recorded and mixed by Daniel Doherty at Darklands Audio, Dublin.

Golden Oriole

Manky, noisy, funky long-form sounds from Norwegian “tech-noize” two-piece Golden Oriole.

They mightn’t know what’d be after hitting ’em.

Toutspunk rock from Derry

What you may need to know…

01. What’s that, you say? Handsome boys in jumpers from Derry City playing enthusiastic rock ‘n’ roll? That’ll be Touts, then.

02. Riffing on the obvious NI punk comparisons, the lads take that energy and give it a modern, more aggro take on the classic power-chord sound.

03. Streaming above is Sold Out, the band’s new single. Shouted-out today on Nialler9, the lads are releasing an E.P. soon on Hometown, the label that’s currently giving us Rejjie Snow among others.

04. Belfast locals can catch the band while they can, this August on the 23rd, playing alongside Blossoms at Customs House Square. They’re supporting some UK pop band or other.

Thoughts: Is yer man Fergal Sharkey or Joe Strummer? He is neither, but these lads are great, making an earnest callback to grittier times without leaning too hard on its clichés.

01. Since we last checked in with Shaker Hymn/Southern Hospitality Board/Quarter/regular disc-jockeying man Caoilian Sherlock, he’s met the minimum requirements to formally receive sainthood before embarking on his solo career in earnest.

02. Himself and Leeside music omnipresence Mr.K have been jamming under the Worm name and have started Small Town Disco, a wee label between them, as reported last week.
