Galway’s about to get a fully kitted-out indoor youth centre, organised and run by the father-and-son team behind the local DC Store.

Writes This is Galway:

The massive two-story space in Fairgreen House has sat vacant for years, but it’s getting a complete revamp thanks to the vision and hard work of John Deely from DC Store Galway. The VAULT will be open to everyone of all ages — it will feature a skatepark, climbing wall, urban library, cafe, as well as adaptable workspaces to hold workshops for design, yoga, cookery, art and more.

Fair play, in fairness.

It’s that time of year again.

Fupp!

Yay!

Eliot Loudermilk writes:

You’ve been very kind to feature my top-notch present Christmas shopping site for the past two years (in 2014 and 2015). It troubles me that people might actually put thought into their presents this year, so I’d be very much obliged if you could feature it again, as I’m sure the shopping stress season has well begun.

Oh, and in an obvious attempt at pandering, look what occasionally comes up as a suggestion.

Terrierspost-hardcore from Cork

What you may need to know…

01. One year after playing their very last gig ever, Cork four-piece Terriers are all in the same country for a few days at Christmas, and are chancing their arms with a charity show.

02. Spinning off from Cork screamo band Slugbait, Terriers specialised in a slick, melodic post-hardcore, with streaks of classic rock riffage.

03. Streaming above is the band’s sole album, Let’s Hear It for the Boys, completed and released last year, shortly before their disbandment.

04. Catch ’em at Fred Zeppelin’s in Cork on the 23rd, with support from Sheffield math-rockers Ganglions and Cork alt-rockers Temperance Parade. A tenner in, all proceeds to Cork Simon.

Verdict: Much joy here for fans of alternative rock, post-hardcore, and the more QOTSA-end of stoner rock japes.

At the Apostolic Palace in the Vatican City.

Taoiseach Enda Kenny and his wife Fionnuala met Pope Francis.

Mr Kenny gave the pope a print of a stained glass window by Harry Clarke while the pope gave Mr Kenny an etching of St Peter’s Basilica.

After last week’s kerfuffle on the still-potential outsourcing of young people’s programming, RTÉ have announced a further step into the Irish music scene, getting behind the annual Choice Music Prize.

RTÉ director-general Dee Forbes says:

Supporting Irish music and Irish musicians is a core part of what RTÉ does and this partnership will allow us to take our support one step further. Through RTÉ2 and RTÉ2FM, two established brands with a long and rich history in supporting Irish music, and through our popular online and mobile platforms, RTÉ will put the RTÉ Choice Music Prize at the centre of a campaign that will bring the best Irish artists and songs from the past year to a wider audience.

The shortlist for this year’s album prize will announced on Wednesday 11th January, 2017, with the winner announced on Thursday 9th March 2017. The awards will be broadcast live on 2FM and presented in extended-highlight form the following week on RTÉ2.

Alan Currie writes:

“Early on Saturday morning, I decided to shoot the sunrise over Greystones and surrounding area in Co Wicklow, Ireland. I was lucky enough that the forecast fog didn’t appear.

Only hampered by three very friendly labrador dogs which appeared and I had to more or less wrestle them to stop them from walking in front of the camera.

When I checked the footage the only thing that invaded the scene during the incident was my backside. I’ve edited that part out for your convenience, enjoy!”
