Following a campaign spearheaded by Village magazine (fair play, etc)…

The government will appoint a barrister to investigate claims made by Gerard Convie, a former planner in Donegal, about the system of planning permissions in the county.

Finally.

The former civil servant has made several attempts to have his allegations investigated by the Department of the Environment.

The Irish Independent can reveal that a senior counsel will travel to Donegal to investigate the allegations, at the request of Environment Minister Alan Kelly.

Mr Kelly made the decision to appoint the barrister after examining the allegations and on the advice of the Office of the Attorney General.

The barrister will interview Mr Convie and council officials as part of the probe.

Among the cases highlighted by Mr Convie are a petrol station which operated for over 10 years despite never having secured planning permission.

Members of the Photocall Ireland photo agency attend a hearing against protestor Steven Bennet, who was charged with damaging property at the Department of Justice during a protest in relation to the penalty points issue.

Eamon has objected publicly to Gardai demanding access to the images on photojournalists Sasko Lazarov’s digital notebook to use as evidence against the defendant. Representatives of the National Union of Journalists supporting Photocall Ireland were also in Court.

Longboat Quay development in Dublin’s docklands

Mick Clifford, in today’s Irish Examiner, reports that fire marshals have been on constant patrol in the Longboat Quay apartment development in Dublin since last June, following “the discovery of major construction flaws that rendered the buildings firetraps.”

He reports:

The discovery of the serious structural deficiencies in the Longboat Quay development in Dublin’s docklands occurred during a routine inspection last June, eight years after the buildings were constructed by former developer, Bernard McNamara.

The deficiencies included the construction of walls that were inadequate for the containment of fire and an absence of smoke vents — regarded as vital to preserve life during fires.

A range of other deficiencies was also identified after a series of investigations following the initial discovery. Most of the deficiencies mirrored those that led to the evacuation of the Priory Hall development in 2011.”
