Senator Ronan Mullen speaking in the Seanad earlier on the issue of Direct Provision:
The treatment of women in the system is deplorable. There are several male-only reception centres in the State. But there are none which provide solely for women. Many women who seek asylum in the State are fleeing the most gruesome and most unimaginable conditions sometimes involving sexual abuse or rape. And for these victims to be placed in a system where there’s an underlying fear perhaps in some cases of a recurrence of abuse is really shocking.

Jason from Firedoor Theatre writes:
“We have a new play starting TONIGHT(not part of the fringe, it’s like fringe-fringe). Molière’s The Misanthrope [at the Ha’penny Bridge, Temple Bar, Dublin] a reworking of Molière’s satirical classic, with a modern Irish twist. Tickets: €12, includes a glass of wine….”

What you may need to know:
1. Venerable veteran Mike Leigh directs Timothy Spall in this biopic of Victorian artist JMW Turner, one of the forerunners of modern abstract art.
2. We liked his early landscapes better. #Hipster.
3. Mr Turner received glowing feedback from critics after its premiere at Cannes, where Spall took home the Best Actor award.
4. Spall is something of a Leigh regular, having also appeared in Life is Sweet (1990), Secrets and Lies (1996), Topsy-Turvy (1999) and All or Nothing (2002).
5. You can’t really go wrong with Leigh. Naked (1993) is a personal favourite, but Meantime (1984), Leigh’s portrait of life under Thatcher in the 1980s is well worth seeking out.
6. Broadsheet Prognosis: Painting is cool.

Tomorrow Scotland faces a choice. A serious choice. A choice the choosing of which will have implications for years to come. A choice about the future, about the very existence of these islands. Broadsheet has long been proud of its independence on questions of caledonian constitutionality. But as the clouds of war gather above Berwick-upon-Tweed we feel the time has come to make a stand.
The history of the relationship between Scotland and England is long and irrelevant. Tomorrow’s referendum is not about the past. It is about Thursday, and all the Thursdays to come.
We urge our Scottish readers to vote Yes, and when you win your place among the nations of the world we will raise a scotch and proudly utter the ancient blessing “iechyd da.”
