Oh.

From The Irish History Podcast:

[Jim Larkin] was soon vilified by the employers of Dublin. In September 1913 they launched a newspaper called “The Toiler” which was described its aims “To advance the interest of labour & protect industry & commerce” Aimed at workers it attempted to undermine the Union. In the article above they stooped to a particular low by ludicrously accusing Larkin of being the son of James Carey. James Carey was one of the Phoenix Park murderers.
The ludicrous attempt to link Carey and Larkin needless to say had no basis whatsoever. Larkin was born in Liverpool while Carey lived in Dublin. While it may seem crass it was part on a huge campaign by Dublin employers to break the ITGWU. By 1914 Dublin’s workers began to drift back to work driven by desperate poverty and by the end of January 1914 the employers had won. Larkin for his part left Ireland emigrating to America.

Thanks Fin

Just some blue whales and Charles Haughey’s old yacht.

From The Irish Air Corps.:

The Irish Air Corps spotted some rarely seen Blue and Fin Whales approximately 80 – 100nm SW off Mizen Head. The CASA fixed wing aircraft was on a standard Maritime Patrol at the time. It is reported that there were several whales in the area. The Irish Whale and Dolphin Group were close by in their vessel the ‘Celtic Mist’.

What you really need to know:

1. This is the ‘trailer’ for the film that inspired the ongoing mayhem in Egypt and Libya, resulting in the deaths of four US personnel, including the American Ambassador to Libya, Christopher Stephens. Watch more here.

2. The film is directed by ‘Sam Bacile’ – believed to be a pseudonym for an anti-Muslim zealot – one thing’s for sure, he’s not a filmmaker.

3. It takes a ‘satirical’ look at the life of Mohammad. Oh dear.

4. The mystery of the film’s creation is ongoing – unsurprisingly, no-one’s in any hurry to take the credit right now.

5. How did an inept piece of anti-Islamic propaganda, one that received a single empty screening in an LA cinema, cause this much trouble? Ask Pastor Terry Jones.

6. This clip has been blocked on You Tube in Egypt and Libya.

Release Date: Don’t go there.

AUTHORITIES IN one of Ireland’s best-known beauty spots are finally cracking the whip on horse-and-cart drivers who may be tempted to tell tall tales to tourists or let their animals defecate in public.

Boatmen and other commercial operators in Killarney National Park will also be targeted by a new penalty point system, with fines and points for a range of offences including non-wearing of dung-catchers and “abuse of a horse” in the case of jarveys. Traditionally tolerated “yarns” by the boatmen and jarveys are also coming in for close scrutiny for any misleading content.

In short: no more talkin’ it, droppin’ it or behavin’ like it.

Romney’s assault on Obama was rare among Republicans. Sarah Palin and Republican National Committee Chairman Reince Priebus joined him in condemning the president, but no other significant GOP leader thought it prudent to immediately single out the president for criticism.

How’s that working out?

Mitt Romney’s sharply-worded attack on President Obama over a pair of deadly riots in Muslim countries last night has backfired badly among foreign policy hands of both parties, who cast it as hasty and off-key, released before the facts were clear at what has become a moment of tragedy.
