Women on Waves write:

This morning the abortion drone flew from the Republic of Ireland to Northern Ireland at Narrow Waters Castle [in Co. Down].

After the drone landed safely, two women took the pills. At the same time, Women on Waves employed a [remote control] speedboat to send over more pills for the women. Making abortion illegal will not keep women from accessing abortion pills, by ship, by mail, through the internet, drone or [remote control] speedboat!

This afternoon, at 2.30pm, there will be another protest in front of the Court of Appeal in Belfast when the appeal regarding the decision by the High Court that Northern Ireland’s abortion law breaches the European Convention on Human Rights will be heard.

Tomorrow we will protest for Repeal of the 8th Amendment at 12.30pm outside Dáil Éireann with Ruth Coppinger TD and Dr Rebecca Gomperts.

The seizures include 78 abortion pills illegally imported, in the form of Misoprostol and Mifepristone.

The counterfeit and other illegal medicines were worth around €350,000.

Among the other products seized were anabolic steroids, sedatives, painkillers, stimulants, illegal injectable tanning products, botulinum toxins and weight-loss products.

Diana King, Kitty O’Kane and Collette Devlin outside Strand Road police station in Derry yesterday evening

Three women [Collette Devlin, Diana King and Kitty O’Kane] have handed themselves into a police station in Derry, stating they have procured and taken illegal abortion pills and requesting that they be prosecuted, in protest at Northern Ireland’s restrictive abortion laws.

The women hope to trigger a trial to showcase the archaic nature of the 1861 Offences Against the Person Act – the legislation which makes abortion in Northern Ireland illegal except in extremely rare circumstances.

King, 72, a retired social worker, said she felt compelled to make a stand…  “It is unforgivable how women are being treated. I am handing myself in to the police to inform them that I have procured the nine-week abortion pills on several occasions,” she said before making her way to the police station.

…The three women put themselves forward ahead of younger women, because they no longer have jobs that might be affected by a criminal record.

Tomorrow the Abortion Rights Campaign (ARC) will hold a lunchtime rally at 1pm at the Four Courts, Dublin, in solidarity with a woman in Northern Ireland who is being prosecuted for obtaining abortion pills for her teenage daughter.

She is charged with obtaining “poison”, despite the fact that the abortion pills (Mifepristone and Misoprostol) would have been prescribed to her daughter on the NHS had she travelled to England or Wales. Like the case earlier this month when a young woman was prosecuted for procuring her own abortion, this case highlights the severe stigma surrounding abortion.

NeedaAbortionIreland writes:

We now know it is not sufficient that women die in order for the state to repeal its abortion law. We now know that the State North and South will isolate, prosecute and torture vulnerable people irrelevant of public opinion.

When confronted with such an attack on our health and on our lives, endless political debates are not enough, action is needed.

Faced with a State that refuses to provide for the healthcare of women, we must facilitate access to this healthcare ourselves and provide the conditions for people to practice this care.

Medical abortion is a unique example of this, as it is healthcare which can be practiced easily and safely at home, with a 2 day course of medication.

Needabortionireland.org will support women in accessing abortion pills in Ireland through Women Help Women.

We provide practical help in accessing pro choice healthcare, a live text support service between 6pm to 9pm everyday, and care packages to make people’s experience of abortion as comfortable as possible….
