Speaking on Newstalk, taoiseach Micheál Martin said that reducing socialisation by around 20% to 30%, following public health advice, and continuing momentum with the booster campaign could mean that the Omicron situation could be managed.

He also said it was his view that vaccination should be voluntary and this system has worked very well in Ireland.

The Taoiseach said he accepted that the unvaccinated took up a disproportionate element of the health service, particularly in terms of intensive care, but, he said, on balance the voluntary approach should continue.

Via Irish Times:

Ireland has a higher Covid-19 vaccination rate than almost all our neighbours apart from Denmark, so the overall level of protection in the community against serious illness is higher than elsewhere in Europe. And most of our vaccines were Pfizer, which offers higher protection and lasts longer than the AstraZeneca doses used widely in the UK.

Meanwhile, the level of demand for boosters is significantly lower than it was for the original vaccine course, even among older and more vulnerable populations.

Over 80 per cent of those aged 80 years and up, along with 75 per cent of 70-79 year-olds, have been given a booster, whereas 100 per cent in both categories received the two-shot vaccine earlier this year.

Given most people are mostly protected through vaccination, this is entirely understandable. Demand has picked up only as warnings about the current Delta wave and the imminent dominance of the Omicron variant multiplied….

The HSE has said it is currently offering booster doses to those aged 50 and over, those living in a nursing home or long-term care facility, healthcare workers, and those aged 16 to 49 with an underlying condition.

…If a person is 30 years or older they will receive a single dose of Pfizer or Moderna as their booster. If they are 29 years or younger, they will receive a single dose of Pfizer.

People can receive these vaccines even if they got an AstraZeneca or Janssen vaccine in their primary vaccination schedule.

The HSE said those who are eligible for a booster do not to need to have received a text message before attending walk-in clinics.

If you get a text, great, follow that text instruction“, Eileen Kelly, the Principal Clinical Lead at the vaccination centre in Swords, Dublin said.

If you don’t get a text, you can still attend a walk-in.”

However, she is advising people to check the HSE website before travelling to clinics to ensure their eligibility.

Currently, we’re over 50s,” she said. “Shortly we’ll be moving to the over 40s.”

Booster jab queue at Citywest vaccination centre last week

This morning.

Via RTÉ News:

People are getting multiple booster vaccine appointments because of a glitch between the Health Service Executive’s vaccination database and the IT systems used by pharmacies and GPs.

The HSE has confirmed that people are being issued with HSE booster appointments after they get booster vaccinations at their GPs or local pharmacy, because of the “gap” between the computer systems and databases.

The Irish Pharmacy Union (IPU) and Irish College of General Practitioners said the “gap” is caused by a time lag as long as two days between their information technology systems and the HSE’s.

In a statement to RTÉ’s Morning Ireland, the HSE said that because “GPs and pharmacies operate on different IT systems, there may be a gap in notification of the vaccination which can, from time to time, result in multiple appointments”.

Taoiseach, Micheál Martin told the Dail that last week 180,000 appointments for booster jabs were issued, but that just 93,000 people had attended.

Via RTÉ News:

The HSE said that in order to give people maximum opportunity to get a booster and to use all capacity in the programme, the HSE is using vaccination centres, GPs and pharmacies as vaccination channels.

It said that in comparison to the primary vaccination programme, it is taking longer to vaccinate people in some groups with the boosters.

It added that this is evident in lower attendance rates at both scheduled clinics, and at walk-in clinics.

“Even allowing for acknowledged issues with notification across the different vaccination systems, it is evident that it is taking longer for people to attend for the booster vaccination.,” the HSE said.
