The HSE’s CCO Dr Colm Henry warned that unvacccinated people have no protection from the virus…
…However, Dr Henry said that vaccinations alone will not control case numbers and said that measures – particularly self- isolating with symptoms – and reducing contacts remain critical to reducing case numbers.
Dr Henry said that two weeks after receiving a booster dose, for adults — aged 50 or more — protection against symptomatic infection was 93% in those who originally had AstraZeneca and 94% in those who originally had Pfizer

Dublin Castle, Dublin 2.
Minister for Health Stephen Donnelly arrives for a cabinet meeting to discuss covid restrictions.
Via Irish Examiner:
Mr Donnelly said he expects the use of Covid-19 booster vaccines to be extended significantly as the evidence for boosters is “incredibly strong”.
In addition to extending boosters to those aged 50 to 59, shots are also to be approved for thousands of people under the age of 50 who have underlying conditions.
Mr Donnelly said that it is “all hands on deck” in rolling out the booster shots.
Meanwhile…
The meeting of the Cabinet’s Covid sub-committee heard significant criticism of the HSE from ministers over delays in the booster campaign, and Defence Minister Simon Coveney offered the use of the army to aid in the battle against the current surge.

Minister for Foreign Affairs Simon Coveney has said that he expects a decision in the coming weeks from Niac about extending the booster campaign to younger cohorts.
Speaking on Newstalk Breakfast, Mr Coveney said that he believed booster vaccines had a role to play in bringing down case numbers. On a recent visit to Israel and Palestine he had seen the dramatic impact a booster campaign had on the number of cases in hospital and intensive care.
As immunity waned, it was definite that booster vaccines had a role to play, he said.“This won’t be confined to the over-60s. It will extend to the younger cohort too.”

Um.
This morning.
Via Eilish O’Regan in the Irish Independent:
It’s a tempting prospect. But could a speedy roll-out of Covid-19 booster shots be the key to avoiding a return of restrictions this winter and saving Christmas?
It takes just one booster jab this time around to reboot the defences of a fully vaccinated person in only two weeks.
Boosters could potentially do a lot of the heavy lifting. But how far across the population do you go with the offer of a booster? It’s a dilemma that will not go away.
It’s for your own elf.

Professor Martin Cormican, Professor of Bacteriology at NUI Galway
This morning.
Third vaccine shots for the immunocompromised are being administered while booster shots will be offered to everyone over 80, and people over 65 in residential settings from next week.
Via RTE News:
Speaking on RTÉ’s Morning Ireland, HSE lead for infection control Professor Martin Cormican said the programmes should run smoothly and there is currently a “very good supply” of the vaccine in Ireland.
The additional dose for the immunocompromised will include anyone over the age of 12, but in the first instance it will be offered to those aged 16 and over, he added.
“There will be a little delay for those between the ages 12 and 15,” he said.
He explained that the reason for this is because they were vaccinated later and there is a need to wait two months.
“That is where you get the most benefit if you allow the interval of two months to go by.”
Prof Cormican said for this third dose or booster vaccine the HSE will make contact with people.

HSE CEO Paul Reid
This morning.
The Health Service Executive has said that a third dose of Covid-19 vaccine for those who are immunocompromised will get under way from next week.
Via RTÉ
Speaking on RTÉ’s Morning Ireland, HSE CEO Paul Reid said contact would be made with people who are deemed at highest risk, saying that risk would be determined by clinical teams.
“It will be a period of five to six weeks to complete this programme,” he said, adding that it will be complex with it focused on the most vulnerable and immunocompromised.
He said identifying the most at-risk would not be a simple process as it is not a list that they can “take off the shelf” but is rather a “complex piece of identification”.
“It does address people who are highly immunocompromised, organ recipients, renal patients, certain cancer patients and certain people on certain medications,” Mr Reid said.
He said if people are not contacted it is likely they are not in that highest risk category.

WHO chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus
This afternoon.
Via Reuters:
The World Health Organization is calling for a moratorium on COVID-19 vaccine boosters until at least the end of September, its head Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said on Wednesday.
The move was to enable that at least 10% of the population of every country was vaccinated, WHO Director-General Tedros said.
The call to stop COVID-19 vaccine boosters is the strongest yet from the UN agency as the gap between inoculation rates in wealthy and poor countries widens.
“I understand the concern of all governments to protect their people from the Delta variant. But we cannot accept countries that have already used most of the global supply of vaccines using even more of it,” Tedros added.
