Chief Medical Officer Dr Tony Holohan

Last night/this morning.

Chielf Medical Officer at the Department of Health, Dr Tony Holohan said:

“Over the course of the last seven days, 32 people with Covid-19 were admitted to critical care facilities and today, there are a total of 60 people with Covid-19 receiving critical care.

“The median age of those in ICU is 55 – this means that 50% of the patients currently in ICU with Covid-19 are aged less than 55 years.”

Dr Holohan added:

“While our vaccination programme continues to offer great hope, at this point in time, only 53% of 16 to 29 year-olds are fully vaccinated. This age group continues to account for the highest incidence of Covid-19 in our population.”

From top: Dr Tony Holohan, Chief Medical Officer, Department of Health; the five ‘scenarios’ outlined in his letter to the cabinet yesterday with the mean number of cases, hospital admissions, ICU admissions and deaths from  July 1, 2021 to September 30, 2021 under each scenario

This afternoon.

Further to the announcement of a delay in re-opening, Government, Chief Medical Officer Dr Tony Holohan said according to the European Centre for Disease Control (ECDC), modelling scenarios….

‘…that the planned easing of these measures should only proceed once a robust, non-reproducible and enforceable system of verification of vaccination or immunity status can be put in place to support this.

“If this is not deemed feasible, the Government should consider pausing further easing of these measures until such a system can be instituted”, it advised.

The letter outlined five separate scenarios, with possible outcomes from “Optimistic” with 165 deaths between 1 July and 30 September to “Pessimistic” with 2,170 deaths from Covid-19.

Tánaiste Leo Varadkar said the Government has taken the “cautious approach”…

HSE briefing.

Chief Medical Officer Dr Tony Holohan said that if people start experiencing flu-like symptoms over the coming days, then to presume it is Covid-19.

He said doctors are seeing very little in terms of other viruses at the moment.

“The positivity rate in the community is approaching 25%. If you have these symptoms, it is unlikely to be anything else other than Covid at this point in time.

“If you’re waiting for a test, if you’ve been referred by your GP or waiting for the result of a test, you must self-isolate,” he said.

Last night/this morning.

Dr Tony Holohan, Chief Medical Officer at the Department of Health, has warned that international travel posed a significant rona risk. It follows Tanaiste Leo Varadkar’s advice yesterday asking people booking flights for Christmas to delay that decision.

“One of the biggest risks will be the re-importation of the disease through international travel,” said Dr Holohan.

When asked if travelling on compassionate grounds, such as a grandchild visiting here from abroad, would be allowed, Dr Holohan said inbound travel from other countries was now a bigger risk because they have higher rates of infection growth than we have.

He said: “We would feel the kind of travel that would normally happen at Christmas time, people coming back to spend time with their loved ones, which we all understand and facilitate, we regard as non-essential for this Christmas.”

Asked if he would be in favour of the vaccine being mandatory, [Trinity biochemist professor] Luke O’Neill said “that’s a tricky one.”

“What they’ve done in the past: you don’t make it against the law, you exclude people. So one prediction here is that you cannot travel unless you have the vaccine, and that would incentivise people. That’s a better way to do it,” O’Neill claimed.

Further to Tanaiste Leo Varadkar’s criticism of NPHET’s Level 5 plan stating it was “not thought through”, a clear rebuke to Chief Medical Officer Dr Tony Holohan…

Via Independent.ie:

Instead of taking Nphet’s advice on board but not accepting it, Varadkar’s calculated takedown displayed his nasty streak.

Rather than being honest with people and saying the Government feels there is an acceptable level of infection and death, the Government has muddied the water by blaming Nphet for giving bad advice.

Nphet has given its advice in good faith in line with its role and the scope of their expertise…

…The chief medical officer came back to his role, saw Nphet’s advice not being taken seriously and a Government failing to implement its own plan to live with Covid-19 through an utter lack of engagement and enforcement. So Nphet put forward a short, sharp shock to the political system and public at large.

Tony Holohan certainly overplayed his hand, but that didn’t justify Varadkar taking it upon himself to destroy a man’s credibility and character.
