Spotted over Oranmore, County Galway…. Did she say yes?
Anyone?
Galway’s about to get a fully kitted-out indoor youth centre, organised and run by the father-and-son team behind the local DC Store.
Writes This is Galway:
The massive two-story space in Fairgreen House has sat vacant for years, but it’s getting a complete revamp thanks to the vision and hard work of John Deely from DC Store Galway. The VAULT will be open to everyone of all ages — it will feature a skatepark, climbing wall, urban library, cafe, as well as adaptable workspaces to hold workshops for design, yoga, cookery, art and more.
Fair play, in fairness.

The Smoke Clears – Galway-based electronics
What you may need to know…
01. The Smoke Clears is a pseudonym of Galway-based house/techno producer John Daly, a project in which he eschews genre tropes for experimental electronics.
02. A leader in his field, Daly has been well-travelled, co-founding and rebooting Irish label Feel Music, and releasing on well-renowned independent labels, among them Drumpoet, Secretsundaze and Running Back.
03. Streaming above is a teaser for the project’s second eponymous LP, released in September via Dublin label/shop All City Records.
04. Appearing live next at the Triskel in Cork on November 12th, with support from WRY MYRRH and Huerco S., as part of the Cork Film Festival.
Verdict: With more in common with ambient electronica and post-rock than with any established club fare, The Smoke Clears allows Daly to explore his own outer limits.
Galway micro-indie label Rusted Rail‘s tenth anniversary happened back in March, and the label is now taking the time to archive its trove of releases on Bandcamp, among other events to mark the occasion.
Writes label boss Keith Wallace (aka Loner Deluxe):
To mark the 10th anniversary of Rusted Rail (it celebrated its first decade back in March) I’ve been populating the Rusted Rail Bandcamp pages with the digital versions of the back catalogue.
While the physical versions of Rusted Rail releases are and always will be available from the label’s website, this is the first time much of the label’s catalogue been available in a non-analogue format.
So far there are releases from So Cow, Loner Deluxe, Phantom Dog Beneath The Moon, Music For Dead Birds, Good Shepherd, Cubs, The Driftwood Manor, The Dovetail Consort and Phosphene on the Bandcamp page and I’ll be updating it weekly until petty much everything is on there.
It’s all part of the ongoing programme of looking back at 10 years of Rusted Rail, with production of a documentary covering the first decade of the label currently in production.
Sound.
Streaming above is an early label release, Best Vacation Ever, the first full-length from Galway lo-fi pop man So Cow.
Gummidge – noise-rock from Galway
What you may need to know…
01. Grubby, gritty noise-rock foolishness is the order of the day for Gummidge, a trio from Gallimh, formed in 2010. You may remember them.
02. Releasing debut album Sick Again in 2012, the band has kept the home fires burning with work on Heartbreakers, a second LP released earlier this month and launched with a Galway gig.
03. Streaming above, available from the band’s Bandcamp. No formal physical release, but all digital purchases to receive liner notes in a card posted with each order.
04. Launching the new album in Dublin, at the Jigsaw arts space, next week on the 5th, with support from Ten Past Seven, 1, and Mercurius Forebrain.
Verdict: Angular, awkward, and noisy as ever. Grand job.
Third Island – Galway post-metal
What you may need to know…
01. Slow, hefty and atmospheric metal is the order of the day for this three-piece of Tribesmen.
02. Formed in May of last year, the band released their debut E.P., Dusk, in July.
03. Streaming above in its entirety is the extended-player, available for download and on CD from their Bandcamp.
04. Catch them Saturday night, playing Cork as part of the Jazz Weekend Music Trail, at Fred Zeppelin’s at 9pm.
Verdict: The sweet-spot between cavernous and considered. One for metallers and shoegazers alike.
‘sup?
Saturday.

Two seal pups, Lilo and Tinkerbell, were released back into the sea… Tinkerbell was the smallest pup they’ve had to nurse at 6.5kg when found.B oth were found along the Galway coast and nursed in Wexford and returned to familiar seas. The two women who found the pups got the honour of opening the container box / cage to set them free in the sea again. It was quite lovely in fairness :)
