Quebec’s Parc de la Gorge de Coaticook transformed into Foresta Lumina – a magical illuminated trail by Montreal based studio Moment Factory.

The display includes a 2km trail through illuminated groves, peopled by shadowy figures and projected nocturnal shenanigans including an atmospheric portal installed at the end of the longest suspension bridge in North America.

aiweiweibicycles01Jeremy Maxwell Kanwar Sandhutonoariki tonoariki2As part of this year’s Scotiabank Nuit Blanche in Toronto – a nighttime art event hosted in the streets of the city – Chinese artist and activist Ai Weiwei has installed a 9 meter high, 30 meter long labyrinth of 3,144 bicycles illuminated with blue and pink lights.

A much larger version of a work exhibited in Taipei last year entitled Forever Bicycles, it reflects the artist’s perception of the rapid pace of Chinese social change. Ai Weiwei couldn’t attend the 2011 exhibition as he faced arrest for his continuing critical stance on Chinese government policy.

Now that’s an artist’s statement.

The exhibition continues in Nathan Phillips Square until October 27th.

No, not that one..

Lilicoptère by artist Joana Vasconcelos is a Bell47 helicopter adorned with ‘ostrich feathers, Swarovski crystals, gold leaf, industrial coating, dyed leather upholstery embossed with fine gold, Arraiolos rugs, walnut wood, wood grain painting and passementerie’.

The sculpture – Vasconcelos’ vision of what Marie Antoinette would have had commissioned for herself – had such a thing been available in late 18th century Paris – was exhibited at the Palais de Versailles last year.

So we pay for the meters and they’re installed for free…

Mr Kenny said he could not comment on the likely cost of the meters as this would have to be decided by the regulator. The cost of installation would be covered by a loan from the National Pensions Reserve Fund, he said.

Over a million homes will require meters to be installed by the end of next year if water charges are to be introduced on schedule in 2014, as set out in the EU-ECB-IMF deal.

The Department of The Environment claims that the installation cost of €300 – €350 per unit is based on ‘pure speculation’ and that the cost could vary ‘depending on the location of the property’

So, good news for anyone selling cheap-ass water meters. And these guys.

Artist Erik Kessels printed out every photograph uploaded to Flickr over the course of one 24-hour period. That’s over a million pictures. Then he piled them all up in Amsterdam’s Foam Gallery.

Maddening, disorienting and wasteful. Yes. Kessels sez:

“We’re exposed to an overload of images nowadays,” says Kessels. “This glut is in large part the result of image-sharing sites like Flickr, networking sites like Facebook, and picture-based search engines. Their content mingles public and private, with the very personal being openly and un-selfconsciously displayed. By printing all the images uploaded in a 24-hour period, I visualise the feeling of drowning in representations of other peoples’ experiences.”
