YONENDublin math-rockers go full-on jazz in new animated video

What you may need to know…

01. Last time we checked in on Yonen, we looked at their singles to date before a run of gigs around the country.

02. Business has picked up appreciably for the Dublin-based four-piece, most recently the release of new single Tokyo, via the band’s Bandcamp.

03. Streaming above is the frankly ridiculous promo video for the single. Produced by animator Ross Ryder and Algorithm Studios, it follows protagonist Podraig’s journey into the titular city over its six or seven minutes. The vid premiered on Nialler9 on Monday.

04. The band are presently on the tour in the UK with one-man band Steve Strong, having had a feature on Fecking Bahamas’ excellent Irish math-rock compilation.

Thoughts: An odyssey of a track and a stunning visual accompaniment. Top quality throughout.

Milky Teeth – Cork indie/pop solo endeavours

What you may need to know…

01. Milky Teeth is the solo nom-de-chords of Cork musician Robbie Barron.

02. Self-recorded and mixed by the man himself, the project keeps him ticking over inbetween stints with The Shaker Hymn and John Blek & The Rats.

03. Streaming above is the found-footage video for new single Sleepiness & Weary Wit, a taster of a planned full-length.

04. Available for free/pay-what-you want download at the project’s Bandcamp.

Thoughts: Not far removed from either of his musical day-jobs, yet distinct in its own right as a slice of hazy guitar-pop.

Naive Ted 4

Naive Tedfurther teasings of The Minute Particulars?

What you may need to know…

01. Regular YMLT readers will be well-up on Naive Ted by now if they weren’t before. Lucha-masked weirdo beats king resident in Limrock.

02. Following up from 2015’s The Inevitable Heel Turn album this year will be The Minute Particulars, a series of collaborations and jams that, according to Ted’s representative Andy Connolly in last night’s Evening Echo, isn’t necessarily a formal album, either.

03. Streaming above is the found-footage vidjo for newly-released track Grind Manifest. This may or may not be part of the aforementioned project.

04. Naive Ted plays the Roundy in Cork tomorrow night at 10.45 as part of Quarter Block Party, triumphantly returning to a spot his performances have left worse for wear in the past.

Thoughts: The line between electronica and demented sound-art in Ted’s output continues to blur wildly.

Lerloonsfuzzy bits & bytes

What you may need to know…

01. Lerloons is a 23-year-old producer based between Galway and Dublin, specialising in lo-fi and ambient, flitting between samplers, synths, and old tape recorders.

02. Debut long-player GOODNIGHT was released in 2015, followed by last year’s full-length 24. Both are available for streaming and download via Bandcamp.

03. Streaming above is newest composition _m4ster-s1ave.ase, released yesterday via their Soundcloud.

04. They’ve also been busy working on soundtracks, yesterday releasing work done for brands at the Milano Fashion Film Festival.

Thoughts: In all of the comfort and familiarity of shards of chiptunes and ambience lies the uncertainty and discord of them falling apart, a line which Lerloons treads lightly.

NERVVSnoise-rock from Dublin

What you may need to know…

01. “Ian and Tom play music in a garage”. An unassuming bio for Dubland “sick-wave” duo NERVVS.

02. Self-releasing debut E.P. Death House in 2015 on download and limited-run CD, the band have since being gigging around Dublin with other noise and lo-fi acts.

03. Streaming above is Death is Yours, from brand-new extended-player A Mixtape of Love Vol.1, officially released yesterday after premiering in its entirety last month over at The Thin Air.

04. A debut full-length is in the works, apparently, as well as upcoming collaborative releases.

Thoughts: Good, nasty, and noisy, NERVVS lurch between the heft early grunge and the elasticity of post-hardcore with ease.

CHANCER – math-rock bangers from Dublin

What you may need to know…

01. While it may only have been a matter of time before an Irish band got around to using the word ‘chancer’ for a band name, it’s well-used on these Dublin math-rock boyos.

02. Beginning as a solo project for musician Dara Walsh, CHANCER has quickly expanded to a four-piece following debut single Whistler, with full-band rehearsal footage being posted to their Facebook.

03. Streaming above is the video for the band’s new single, Banger, available now from their Bandcamp. The tune premiered on UK math-rock blog Fecking Bahamas, where they also dropped the announcement of an upcoming Irish math compilation.

04. Wait for it at 3.46.

Thoughts: Lovely, awkward, loud, noisy math-rock, not dissimilar to early Adebisi Shank or parts of BATS’ sound, but with a more rough-hewn sense of humour in their aesthetic and references. Good tack.

Grim Pickinztroublesome tunes from Dublin and the UK

01. Kynz-Illa from Dublin and DateOne from Peterborough are the constituent parts of Amsterdam-based project GRIM PICKINZ.

02. December of 2014 saw the duo release The Troublesome Sound E.P. independently, and they’ve since been regulars both around Amsterdam’s venues and on guest appearances for Irish rappers and producers.

03. The remastered edition of their extended-player is available for streaming in the widget above, and for download from their newly-setup Bandcamp. Kynz-Illa is also streaming his instrumentals (and licensing them to interested musical parties) from his own new Bandcamp.

04. Comes to Broadsheet offices Karl’s den via the recommendation of Limerick beat dons The Unscene.

Thoughts: Heavy-hitting boom-bap for those partial to same, topped off by deft Dub-accented wordplay.

GUILTY OPTICS“Downstroke wizardry”

What you may need to know…

01. Last time we checked in with GUILTY OPTICS (their all-caps, not your writer’s), they’d just released their first single in a while, ahead of completing work on their debut album.

02. While we await more news/noise on this topic, the band are currently planning more national touring in 2017.

03. Streaming above is And So It Goes, the follow-up to last year’s streaming single The Kayapo Ghosts, premiered last week at The Thin Air after a prolonged wait, judging by the given upload date on the band’s Soundcloud.

04. Headlining a gig at the Tivoli Backstage tomorrow night at 8pm. We covered the other two veteran bands on the bill this week, also – Ten Past Seven and Elk supporting.

Thoughts: Punky, angular noises, delivered with earnestness and aplomb. Grand.

GUILTY OPTICS

Elk

Elkpop/hardcore/punk from Cork

What you may need to know…

01. Returning from a prolonged hiatus are Leeside live faves of the mid-late aughts, pop/heft outfit Elk.

02. Releasing debut album We Should Start Our Own Gang in early 2009, the lads went quiet shortly thereafter, re-emerging live periodically, including for the launch of a split 7″ single with Crayonsmith in 2011. It’s been a busy few years, with the boys keeping the fires burning in, offhand, No Spill Blood, Hands Up Who Wants to Die, All Tvvins and Guilty Optics.

03. That long-player of theirs is streaming above, and available for free download via Bandcamp.

04. Elk return on Saturday night at Tivoli Backstage in Dublin, supporting GUILTY OPTICS alongside Ten Past Seven. Ridiculous lineup.

Thoughts: Straightforward pop lurches into dreamy sounds, lurches back out into heft and distortion. Something for everyone, and a welcome return.
