Members of the Irish South and West Fish Producers’ Organisation are to attend a meeting in the Russian Embassy in Dublin tomorrow.

The Ambassador of Russia to Ireland H.E. Yuriy Filatov issued the invitation to hear directly the fishermen’s concerns over proposed Russian naval exercises which are planned to take place off the south west coast early next month.

The delegation of fishermen is expected to highlight the potential harm to fish stocks and cetaceans from the effect of military sonar use and possible disruption from live ammunition drills in the area during the drills.

It is expected that they will also formally request that the planned area for the exercises be relocated further south west into deeper water off the continental shelf.

Further to the Russian military drill planned for 240km off Ireland’s southwest coast.

Via Irish Times:

Irish fishing boats are planning to peacefully disrupt plans by the Russian navy to conduct military exercises off the coast of Cork next month.

Patrick Murphy, chief executive of the Irish South and West Fish Producers Organisation said that the area was very important for fishing and that they wanted to protect biodiversity and marine life.

Hmm.

Mr Murphy said:

“We’re entitled to go fishing here. It’s our waters. Can you imagine if the Russians were applying to go onto the mainland of Ireland to go launching rockets, how far would they get with that? It’s no different to fishermen, this is our ground, this is our farm, this is where we earn our living.

“Why should somebody be able to come in and do that in our waters? This is going to affect our livelihoods and the marine life. There’s seismic activity out there for years and it actually changed the migratory pattern of tuna at one stage.”

The Russian Ambassador to Ireland Yury Anatoliyevich Filatov hosts a press conference in the embassy over the current situation in the Ukraine and Russia’s plans to hold naval exercises 240km off the southwest coast of Ireland.

Ambassador Filatov complained of a “propaganda campaign” about a Russian threat to Europe and he said there are no plans for Russia to attack Ukraine or anybody else.

He said:

“It looks like the topic of the exercises fits in the ongoing propaganda campaign led by the US and its NATO to create an illusion over Russian threats to Europe.”

Mr Coveney told reporters in Brussels he had made it clear to the Russian ambassador that the Government did not welcome the move.

He was speaking ahead of a meeting of EU foreign ministers which will be dominated by escalating tensions over Ukraine.

Mr Coveney said the planned Russian naval exercises were in international waters, “but it is also part of the exclusive economic zone of Ireland.”

This morning/afternoon.

Russian President Vladimir Putin is “waiting for official results” from the US presidential election before congratulating a winner, the Kremlin said today.

“We consider it correct to wait for the official results to be finalised. I want to remind you that President Putin repeatedly said he will respect the choice of the American people,” said Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov.

…China said today it would follow international custom in making a statement on the US election, when asked why Beijing had not congratulated Democrat Joe Biden on his victory.

“We noticed that Mr Biden has declared election victory. We understand that the US presidential election result will be determined following US law and procedures,” foreign ministry spokesman Wang Wenbin told a daily media briefing.

The World anti-doping agency has voted unanimously to ban Russia from international sport for four years for doping offences.

Russia now have 21 days to appeal the sentence, which would see the country banned from participating at next summer’s Olympics in Tokyo and the Qatar World Cup of 20

Your editorial Mueller Report: Open Questions (March 26th), reflecting on the findings of special counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation, in itself raises, perhaps unwittingly, some valid questions.

The article rather flatly declares that “we do know that the Russian government interfered repeatedly” in the US elections. That might be an article of faith (as well as useful political tool) in some quarters in Washington, but otherwise looks like a hollow allegation, not supported by any fact.

What kind of evidence is there to support such a claim? We certainly know the answer – there is none, since it has never been a policy of the Russian government to meddle in the US president elections, nor, for that matter, in the elections in any other country of the world.

One should respect the right of The Irish Times to hold an opinion of the US president and his policies. But is it not an interference in the US elections to make an outright claim that a legitimate president of a foreign country – whether you like him or not – is “unfit for office and must be replaced”? – Yours, etc,
