The village of Poynton in the UK has instituted a style of urban design originally pioneered by the late Dutch traffic engineer Hans Monderman – getting rid of traffic lights, pavements and other traditional road architecture to calm traffic and reduce accidents.

Work on the line, known as Luas BXD, including filling in basements and diverting utilities, is due to begin next year, with trams operational by 2017.
